Books are often adapted into movies, some more than successful than others. People often bitch and moan that the movies are never as good as the books, but the way I see it is, they are two different mediums, and yes, concessions generally need to be made (that isn't to say that good books are never adapted into bad movies, though). Keeping this in mind, what books do you think would make great movies? Although not prose, when I read Fray, I thought it would make a fantastic movie. The plot and the pacing lent itself brilliantly to the medium. Also, I am really disappointed that Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk never got adapted into a movie. The rights were bought, and David Fincher (who also directed Palahniuk's Fight Club was looking to direct), but it ended up falling through because: The climax of the book features the two heroes flying a plane into a landmark building. This was considered to be too sensitive in a post 9/11 world (the book was released before 9/11. If they were to change the end of the book for the movie, it would have ruined the story - it's one of those things that "needed" to happen for the actual story to have the gravity it did.

I totally agree about Fray. That just seems like it would be a kick ass film. I'd like to see "The Hobbit" turned into a movie (and not like that weird cartoon), but I doubt that will happen.
I'd also like to see any Edgar Allan Poe story turned into film. I know there are a few that have been made, but I'd like to see some re-made.

Wasn't there talk about Peter Jackson adapting The Hobbit at some point?
I agree that Edgar Allan Poe stuff could be brilliant. That said, I'd like to see a series of them of maybe hour long episodes. His stories are generally short, so I think it would work better than feature length movies, personally.

Peter Jackson is in a legal dispute with the studio which owns the rights to "The Hobbit" so i doubt it will happen. When i read Derailed i really wanted it to be made into a movie as i couldn't put the book down. When it was i was excited and went to watch it but was deeply disappointed. Not least with the casting. Two actors (Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston) who i don't rate were cast as the leads. I think that ruined it for me already I would like to see "Prowlers" by Christopher Golden. Loved it.

Did the movie manage to keep the essence of the book at all, Glenn? And I thought Peter Jackson and the studio had smoothed over the disputes.

I would like to see "Prowlers" by Christopher Golden. Loved it. Oh me too! I love that series and it's sad that it ended so soon. Would be great to see it as a movie. I would like to see Scott Westerfeld's Peeps or Midnighters (though this would be better as a TV series) turned into the movie.

Did the movie manage to keep the essence of the book at all, Glenn? And I thought Peter Jackson and the studio had smoothed over the disputes. I felt that the film didn't truly capture the paranoia that the main character feels throughout the book. And as the book is basically all about that, it just didn't do it for me

There are a few books I'd love to see made into movies, some Jack Higgens ones for instance - but cast properly. My favourite book was turned into a crappy early 90's movie and badly cast with a piss poor budget. A couple of Stephen Coonts and Lee Child books would make great movies.

A lot of Meg Cabot's books would make really good chick-flicks.

Yeah, I think so too.
Not so much a chick flick (not really), but I think Avalon High by her would be a good movie, too.

Any recent reads that you like to see as a movie?
Gotta agree with Liz - definitely like to see some Meg Cabot books become a movie.

I think they could turn the It Girls series into a TV show. Worked well for Gossip Girl.

Is It Girl the spinoff from GG? The one about the sister or something? I wouldn't mind Fearless being a TV show. They tried it out once but it didn't work. But I think if they followed the main premise of the story, I think it could. But on the other hand, I don't want them ruining the books.

Yeah it's about Jenny going to boarding school. I think they would have to change her name (Jenny in the books is nothing like the Jenny in the TV show), but other than that - I think it'd work.
Fearless would be good. I've been wanting to see some of the episodes from the TV show.

I saw the pilot and it wasn't very good. Gaia is in the FBI instead of High School - which I thought is where they went wrong.

I would like to see Dean Koontz "Watchers" become a movie. It's one of my favourites of his, and Phantoms wasn't too bad. I also think the Anita Blake books would make a great series if done properly by the right people, as each book reads like an episode.

I have always thought that the Tomorrow series by John Marsden should be made into a movie - and it is! (well, the first book).

Anita Blake as a show or movie would suck! No pun intended. More Anne Rice, and Jamintha by Jennifer Wilde is a good story line.
