In grades 7-8 Music class was compulsory and we had to learn an instrument. After that though we didn't have to elect Music as a subject. I did because I enjoyed it, that was where I learned Clarinet. Does every primary school teach recorder?

I think they do! We had to take music in Primary school (where we learnt the recorder) and the first 2 years of Secondary school, where a few lessons were on the guitar. You could then decide to join the guitar club after that.

We could pick practically any instrument in grades 7-8 (and 9-10 if we chose music as a subject - though if we did it was expected we already knew one instrument pretty well) as long as the school had it. Most boys picked guitar of course

I don't think we were allowed to pick instruments during my day. Might be different now. Oh I did play the Triangle! ;D

Oh I'm not comparing me and you. Just me and the current crop of kids in S'pore right now. My little cousin does music in school and he gets to learn the saxophone. I never got to do that unless I joined the band.

We didn't get to choose to join the band - we were invited. You could ask, but unless you were at a certain level with your chosen instrument the answer was no. I was invited at the end of year 7, it was very exciting at the time I had a fair bit of fun in band over the years though.

I tried joining the band once. I went to their audition and because I didn't know how to play any instrument, I felt left out and decided not to join.
You didn't need to know how to play a instrument though. They'd teach you along the way. They'll ask you to try out different instruments and see which one is best for you and go from there. It was still quite intimidating though.
But looking back, I wished I learnt how to play something. I always wished I knew how to play the drums or the guitar. ;D

^It's never too late to learn! Better late than never, as they say.
I play the flute, piccolo, and piano. Also, I'm currently learning guitar and drums for my church's worship team. And does recorder count? lol.

It is an instrument but I don't think a very hard one The plastic ones sound awful too, no matter how good you are

I learnt to play that in Primary school. I always wondered why I had to learn how to play it. It didn't teach me anything later in life.

Recorder is actually difficult to play if you want to hit the really high notes. Then you have to cover up half the hole, ect.
I had to learn recorder in elementary school, too. It was actually really useful in helping me learn the flute because the fingerings are similar.

It is a little similar to clarinet too. I don't think many people stick with the recorder long enough to try anything hard with it, but I stand by my thoughts that no matter how good someone is a plastic recorder sounds horrible I don't like the sound of it. A wooden one might sound better but I don't know, haven't heard one played.

Sean can play hot cross buns on the guitar Bernie teaches him and Ella little bits here and there, so maybe they will. Sean plays the recorder too.

Hot cross buns is the best song to learn.
