Let's debate!
I do not think Harry is a Horcrux. Voldemort went to Godric’s Hollow that night intending to kill him. Why would he have made Harry a Horcrux if he was going to kill him? Just doesn't make sense. Furthermore, Voldie KEEPS trying to kill Harry. Voldemort is incredibly smart. I don't think he would make a huge mistake like that - repeatedly.
Thoughts/opinions?

I personally think Harry is an accidental Horcrux. We already know that Dumbledor believed Voldemort was preparing to make his final horcrux with Harry's death. In the shock of what happened, I think he accidentally transfered a part of himself into Harry. It would explain why Harry is a parseltongue, why he could see inside Voldemort's mind and feel his emotions. I really think he might be one.
But I also kind of hope I'm wrong.

I think its too obvious to be true. The books are so good because of the surprise effect. I mean Dumbledore killed by Snape *shock*. The horcrux will have had to go into Harry when Voldy killed Lily as only a murder would create a horcrux. And seeing as Harry survived i dont think it is possible to have created one.

But then you have to ask yourself if the act of killing Harry is enough to create a horcrux, even if it didn't work. I personally think the act itself is enough. Voldemort cast the spell with no doubt in his mind that he was killing an innocent child. I think that's what rips the soul, not the actual death.

He was trying to kill Harry because of the prophecy, I agree with Skitty that it was the act that rips the soul not actual death. I don't think Harry is a Horcrux. Too obvious.

I think that besides the intention of killing you also have to have the intention of making a horcrux as you are committing the murder. Otherwise if Voldemort killed someone near a potted plant that coud accidentally become a horcrux.

Lol thinking of a potted plant Horcrux...
I agree with both sides. Skitty described the reasons why perfectly I think. They do have a very strong connection and there is a lot of evidence to back up the theory: Harry's ability as a Parselmouth, the dreams, the visions, the sense of when Voldemort's near, the burning in the scar, Dumbledore telling Harry that some of Voldemort's powers were transferred to him...And though Voldemort is really smart, if it was an accident he might be unaware of it.
However, I agree that it seems a little obvious and that's not JKR's style. She is more one for the element of surprise. Again, however, she probably had this planned out years ago and I doubt she'd change the plan just because fans were right about something. Then again she might, as I said: element of surprise.
If Harry is not a Horcrux I hope a more concrete reason for their unusally strong connection is given.

Voldemort was Harry's fathers, uncle's, cousins, ex girlfriends, housekeepers, pet dogs groomers, boyfriend for a month. I think that explains it perfectly

JKR wouldn't change her story because it became to obvious to readers, but she had the main plot all set out and was still able to have them as shocks, like Dumbledore's death that way. She would have had that plan for Snape from the beginning and weaved the deception brilliantly. I think she will do the same with the Horcruxes, one as big as it being Harry, were it true, would have come as a shock to readers. The way it is she will set it up so that we no longer believe he is one, or he won't be one. But I agree with Lexie, there will need to be some connection between Harry and Voldemort further explained. Its set up a little too cleanly for Harry to be a Horcrux for my liking.

Um... could somebody please explain what a Horcrux is?

It's the way Voldemort has made himself basically immortal. A wizard can tear his soul through the act of murder and hide the torn away piece in an object. That object is a horcrux. Voldemort has reportedly done this six times, with the seventh bit of his soul still residing in his body.

Ah, fair enough. That clears things up, then. I'll refrain from answering this with any thoughts until I actually sit down and read the books, rather than just watch the movies.

I gave a bit more detailed answer in the Enlightenment thread if you care to take a look.

The whole idea of the Harry being a Horcrux makes me think about the theory that Nagini is also one. This just doesn't make sense. The whole point of the Horcruxes is that LV wants to live forever - putting his soul into things that will, one day, die, doesn't seem right.

So Skitty was exactly right in her first post... thoughts on Harry being a Horcrux, or any of the horcruxes?

Ha! Score! I totally win.
I have to say, I felt so vindicated by the concept. What I wasn't prepared for was him to just accept it and walk to his death, passing on the task to the next person. I mean, I knew he had to, but it still hurt, you know? That scene was apparently the scene that caused JK to have her break down in the hotel in NYC.

My friend is trying to say Harry wasn't a Horcrux. Um, what the hell? It's really pissing me off, because "He's not really a Horcrux if it was an accident"...uh, yeah, it is. It doesn't matter if it was on accident, or on purpose. Part of Voldemort's soul was in Harry. That makes him a HORCRUX, accidental or not.
*headdesk*

A Horcrux is: 'the receptacle in which a Dark wizard has hidden a fragment of his soul for the purposes of attaining immortality'.
That's from the Harry Potter lexicon. Harry was indeed a receptacle holding a piece of Voldemort's soul as he attempted to gain immortality. I don't see how it can be argued otherwise.

Oh Harry was definitely a Horcrux.. what was the argument against that? I'd be interested to hear her proof of that when its said clearly in the book that he is one
