How does one discover that they can do something like this? Do you think they just sat down one day and said I'm going to draw a picture using only the words for the items I'm drawing. It'll be fantastic!

My brother did something like this (but with animals) for a class assignment and he told me that he used a computer to do it (though he didn't explain how). So maybe this was done the same way. However it's done, it's still very cool.  |

There are creative people out there who will look at interesting ideas for art, so I think it was a conscious decision that the artist made.
As for whether it was done by hand or not, it looks like that it's hand written, at least - there are differences in the letters, etc.

Well, my brother's assignment reqiures him to draw by hand. He 'cheated' by using the computer to draw it out first. Then print it out and traced over it by hand. So the same could have been done by this artist.  |
