The Hobbit is a far simpler read and is often read by teachers to young children. I admit that i was entranced by the LotR books (apart from a group of three or four chapters in the first book which hold no purpose in progressing the story) and couldnt put them down. The Silm is even better.

Yeah The Hobbit was read to my Year 4 class. Many years later i tried to read LOTR. Could not get into it at all. It bored the hell out of me and it was a chore

I've actually never read any of the other books, except book 1-2 of LoTR. First of all, I had never heard of them until I started searching for LoTR as an english edition (also the reason why I stopped reading the books.. got weird reading them in Swedish.. hate that they've changed all the names and I know them in english due to the movies.. and also, the swedish names SUCKS! ). As far as I can tell, "The Hobbit" is about Bilbo and the ring(?) or am I completely off my game?

Yeah the Hobbit centers around Bilbo and he finds the Ring, but the Ring isn't the main plot in the book.

I dont think Tolkien had even put too much thought into the Ring at that point "The Hobbit" is about the journey and the adventure. The Ring is just a small part, but it brings us a great chapter with Gollum so its worth it ;D

I heard that Lord of the Rings only came about when Tolkien was asked to write a sequel to The Hobbit by the book publisher. When he sat down to write it, everything just flooded out from him. Does anyone know if that's actually the story? I know that it was only intended to be a single book, but not if that's how it came about.

No, I don't think that's why he wrote the LotR. Tolkien was always writing bits and pieces of stories about Middle Earth and when he published the Hobbit, I think he intended to publish another story later (LotR). That's what I've read.

I seem to remember my lecturer saying something alone those lines when we studied Fellowship. Next time I talk to my uncle I'll ask him - he's a GIANT LOTR fan and would probably know. One day I'll finish reading LOTR....
