What are some of your favourite "classic" books? (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Pride & Prejudice, etc.) I was reading Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, but I found that I just couldn't really get into it, not that I tried all that hard. I only read some of the beginning. I don't know what it was that made me not want to read it, honestly. I haven't read a lot of classics. I say that mostly because I can't think of any right now.

I don't read many classics, but the ones I have read have been very good. I've read the Count of Monte Cristo, Treasure Island, and I will be reading Beowulf this year which I hear is a good one as well (probably more, but I can't think of them right now).

Hm...most of classics I've read have been for school. Doesn't mean I didn't enjoy them. A Doll's House was okay, Emma was okay, I really like Little Women and Tess of the d'Urbervilles is great.

I LOVE the classics!
Jane Austen is good, as is Hawthorne, the Brontes, all the Russians, "Ivanhoe" is just phenomenal in my opinion for some reason. I don't like every classic I read, but I do tend to enjoy them a lot more than the new stuff that comes out. They're definitely classic for a reason.

I haven't had a chance to read the classics. I tried once but lost interest in it after the first few pages. I think it's because of the language and also because of the theme. Most of the classics are based on themes/genre that I'm not a fan of.

To me, it depends on what meets your definition of "classics". I would consider a lot of Isaac Asimov's sci fi work to fit into the category, though some of you mightn't.
I'm a big fan of Mark Twain, as well as "Dracula" and "Frankenstein".

Does anybody else have any favourite "classic" literature?
And also, do you consider more recent works, or works not fitting under "classic" literature, to be real literature? I once had a writing teacher who virtually had no respect for anything but the classics (particularly Jane Austen). For anyone who wrote in a different style, or wanted to include more modern themes in their writing, she basically wrote it off.

I used to love reading Shakespeare, loved Romeo and Juliet. Haven't read them in a long time though
