I read them, Paul reads them, Skitty reads them, and Bre's been reading some lately, with a few more of you guys also reading Buffy. So I figure there's enough interest to start a thread in them in general. Do people think that comics/graphic novels can be considered literature? Or does their format necessitate that they can never reach the heights of a novel? And what have people been reading that they enjoy? What would you recommend to your fellow KAXers?

I read all my dads old Judge Dredd comics. Absolutely loved them. They are rather gory but the images just make me laugh. Plus its where i first discovered the word "Crud". I have to be thankful for that

LOL, I think I first learned "crud" in the old pre-cartoon Ninja Turtles comics (which were quite violent themselves ). Judge Dredd is great fun, even if I haven't read too many of them (they're reasonably difficult to get hold of here in Aus). That said, for a fairly small British publication, they have had quite a bit of "star talent" get their start in them.

I've just recently started to read comics. After reading the first few issues of Buffy season 8, I thought I should read other comics so that I can get use to the format. So far, I'm enjoying what I've been reading. I've read a few Superman ones, Spiderwoman (just the one) and Captain America (I finally understood the Nick Fury reference in Buffy season 8 ).

LOL re Nick Fury, Irene. Have you been reading the recent Captain America ones? After he was assassinated? I've never been a fan of the character, but that arc got me in.

I've been a fan of a few comic books, but I never was really attached to them. The only ones I enjoy (besides the Buffy ones) are Calvin and Hobbs and Foxtrot. I can read those time and time again.

I read Archie comics, and I wouldn't consider them literature. They're fun to read though.

LOL, I wouldn't be calling those "literature" either. That said, they're one of the few comics these days that are suitable for kids.

I think my favorite series is The Sandman. I've only read the first two volumes, but both really drew me in asap.

The Sandman is spectacular, and the quality keeps increasing. It is definitely something worth continuing with.

I've been getting my comics from my library and they are pretty slow. Most of the comics I've read are the older ones. I think my favorite series is The Sandman. I've only read the first two volumes, but both really drew me in asap. I've seen this around but never gave much thought for it. What is it about?

Re Captain America, I don't think it's actually been reprinted into trade paperback form for libraries to pick up, anyway.
Re Sandman, it's about Dream, one of the seven "Endless" (the others being Death, Destiny, Destruction, Desire, Despair and Delirium), and he is the personification of all dreams, imagination, and stories. It takes place after he's been imprisoned for years by an occultist, and he needs to atone for his past sins. It starts off as almost straight horror, though as it moves along, and for the majority of the run, it becomes more fantasy based.
It's written by Neil Gaiman, who also wrote Stardust (both the graphic novel and "standard" novel, which has just been adapted into a movie), the Neverwhere TV series and book, the movie Mirrormask (which was directed by Dave McKean, who painted the Sandman covers). The guy's really prolific.
I'd also recommend you check out his Death comics, spun out from Sandman. The scale is far smaller, but they're well worth the time.

new 3 part serenity comic coming out in march
Serenity: Better Days, is a step back in time to the early years of the Firefly crew, and the fledgling gang's turbulent attempts to cope with success after they pull off their first successful heist. It features the same creative team as Those Left Behind, with the story by Joss Whedon and Brett Matthews, art by Will Conrad, and Adam Hughes providing all three covers this time.
so who else is gonna be getting this apart from me and Allan?

I didn't mind Those Left Behind, so I'll probably pick up this new one as well.

I'm obviously going to be getting it. Dark Horse (the publisher) issued a press release and apparently they're really going to be pushing it (likely after the success of Buffy season 8) - they're calling 2008 the year of Serenity.

Better Days hasn't been too bad, so far. Quite enjoyable.
Bre, have you read any more of Sandman yet? If so, have you been enjoying it?

Yeah I did, I think I'm on volume 5 or 6 now. And I'm still enjoying it. Will probably finish the series this summer when I have more time to read them.

I'm a big comic book fan from way back. I've recently finished reading the Sandman series myself. Gaiman is amazing and there's no question in my mind between authors like him and Frank Miller and many others comic can be good literature. Often better then some of the crap books that get churned out these days. Of course there are some comics that are just trash but I think the medium as a whole is under rated.
For those of you out there looking for something to read check out "Y: The Last Man"
