I'm not sure if I'm alone in this but I was talking to friend about First Date and Buffy casually says to Willow "Why does everyone think I'm still in love with Spike?"
She said it as if it was accepted to be true and I never thought that to be the case.
At the end of Season 6 Spike was trying to get Buffy to admit it and after the AR she replied
"Ask me again why I could never love you" or something along those lines and lest we forget there was the whole big deal of Buffy saying those words in Chosen. Is it just me or is something incongruent here?

I think it was a slip up from Buffy, her admitting aloud that she had loved him, at least a little. Its something she had never admitted to anyone, not even herself. So I think it shows she did, but didn't want to admit it.

Hell of thing to slip out in passing though, and no issue was ever made of it.

Thats the kind of thing than can just slip out in passing though. And I doubt her friends would bring it up again.

I think it was something her friends had come to accept based on what they observed when she and Spike were together--even if Buffy herself wouldn't admit it. I'd never actually thought of it before now, really. I just always took it to mean that she was finally admitting to herself and her best friend that yes, she did have those feelings for him back then. I really don't think it makes the scene in "Chosen" any less special or any less of a big deal for them, since that's the first time she had admitted to him how she really felt.

It just seems kind of odd seen as she never really admitted it to herself judging from her actions in Season 6. It wasn't like with Wes when it slipped out and Gunn called him on it, that to me was good writing, this seemed a little to casual based upon something that was so temptuous and in the end violent. It was too casual for my liking.
I actually found out from BW that apparently it was a mistake on the writers part (or SMG's) which actually makes more as it was suppose to be "Why does everyone think I'm in love with Spike?". Buffy's far to reflective about love to make such a throw away comment, it just doesn't seem consistent with her character.

The quote came from a very confused point in Buffy's life, and I think that the line stemmed from that. She had feelings for Spike, but was it love? It's not something that she was willing to admit to herself, but on a subconscious level, maybe she did.
Willow also knew that it's a sensitive subject for Buffy, and by not calling her on it was a display of tact.

Buffy never actually loved Spike, hence, "No you don't, but thanks for saying it." It's right there. The whole point was for Spike to die for her knowing that she would never love him, to make it more special. That's my opinion anyway. I mean, we clearly see that she is still madly in love with Angel in Chosen and even thinks of having a future with him, but not a future with Spike. Spike and Buffy, I think were confidants in a sense, friends. They were the only the two who understood each other the way they did, like Cordelia and Angel. I don't think she ever loved him though.
Sorry if there are S/B shippers on here. I didn't mean this to deny the S/B ship. I respect your love of it.

Spike may have believed Buffy never loved him, that doesn't mean she didn't. I wouldn't have thought Buffy would say something like that just to make Spike happy in his dying moments. Nor do I think her kissing Angel means she still loves him. There was nothing to suggest that at all, she admitted there could be a chance for them in the future sure, not that she still loved him. She didn't say there was no future with Spike either. And that entire scene is out of place anyway.

Oh Don't get me started on Chosen. Actually Jean-Vic, as a Cangel supporter I'm surprised you put any stock in that ridiculous cookie dough speech. Angel was in love with Cordelia it was totally out of character for him to be pashing Buffy, same with her because of Spike. And Spike said 'no you don't' to Buffy to make her leave.

Actually, I thought the kiss was more out of character for Angel than Buffy. It was established that Angel loves Cordy, period. With Buffy, though, the situation was a far messier situation, with nothing actually being resolved.
That said, I chalk that kiss up to a heat of the moment kinda thing.

I'm not sure about Angel, he did say Buffy's name in his Cordy perfect day fantasy, does that mean, deep down, it always comes back to Buffy?
As for Spike and Buffy? I've never had a problem believing Buffy loved him and indeed he may not have believed it but she didn't exactly have a chance to reaffirm it, it was mostly about Spike's insecurity.
As for the line in First Date, I find it weird that Buffy would say it so casually, even if she was confused about her feelings towards Spike. After everything that happened between them, the fact that Buffy would say it casually as if it was accepted seems out of character for Buffy who has always been reflective with the 'L' word with Angel and Riley. I think something like Spuffy deserves better writing as it is a powerful relationship and I would say it makes sense that it was a mistake on the writers part.

She didn't say it casually though, it was a slip of the tongue, she hadn't meant to say it. Accidentally blurting out your feelings isnt the same as casually saying you love someone.
As for Angel saying Buffy's name - I always assumed it was because he was rememebering the feeling of losing his soul and reminded him of the time with Buffy. If it all came back to Buffy, it would have been Buffy in the Shaman's dream spell.

Well she said "Still in love" as if it were accepted, to me that's casual especially when it wasn't established she admitted it to herself after saying to him "Ask me again why I can never love you"
As for the Buffy thing, it could be subconcious. One the surface he wanted Cordy, no doubt but on some level did he still want Buffy?
