In Empty Places, Anya says to Buffy about her powers: "They were just handed to you. So that doesn't make you better than us. It makes you luckier than us."
I've always disagreed with this statement because Buffy wasn't just chosen out of the blue, she was chosen because of potential. She's still the chosen one, even if her powers came to her easily. However, Anya seems to think her powers were just handed to her. So, what do you guys think? Do you think Buffy is lucky for her powers, or do you think she actually deserves them? What about every other Slayer?

Well being a Slayer isn't necessarily what I'd categorize as 'lucky'. Anya is right that Buffy didn't earn her powers and as far as her deserving well like I said, being a Slayer is tough job so in any respect it's not fair that Buffy is the Slayer. Buffy also cannot use th argument that she has the right of leadership based upon being a Slayer, because at this point, she wasn't the only one.
What Buffy does is earn the right to respect through her actions, she has to define it. The Slayers power is born out of subjugation but Buffy gains that power back and defines for herself what being a Slayer means. The other Slayers have the same responsibility. Didn't work for or earn their powers, they may not even want them (I hope that is addressed further in Season 8) but with the power they have it's up to them what they do with it.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't consider Buffy lucky. I think towards the end of the series though, she's definitely earned her powers.

Buffy may not have deserved the slayer tag when she first became a slayer, but through her actions from then on - hell yes she earned it. Anya's statement is crap imo, Buffy had saved the world, and countless lives. She didn't always do that with her strength alone (case in point - Helpless). She also came up with plans, sure with help, but not always. Does it make her better than others? No, but it makes her a bloody good person and a great slayer and Anya was out of line imo. Lucky my ass, was Anya remembering the two times Buffy gave her life for others? The countless times she could have died for others

Plus Buffy could have gone the Faith route and abused her powers. Or listened to her mum and decided to ignore what was going on in the dark, but she didn't. The Anya statement is terrible, in a pretty terrible scene to be perfectly honest.

It showed how little Anya knows about slayers. Having that power didn't make her lucky, it meant she couldn't walk away because it was her responsibility. The other scoobies were luckier that they could have left the fight anytime they wanted to. Buffy couldn't.

Anya knew little about most things. A person who committed thousands of murders with little to no remorse should not be allowed to pass judgment on someone who has dedicated their entire adult life to saving people.

ITA. And none of the others said anything either about Anya's comment (from memory). How lucky is she to risk her life - to save THEIR lives all the time?!

Anya always was full of crap about most things. But thats because she was given her powers because of her other, more devious abilities and she couldn't properly understand just what Buffy had given up as a result of her powers

That's a good point Tash. Anya was given her powers for a reason. And further to that, she was still trying to come to terms with a mortal life. That, and she is full of crap 9 out of 10 times.

I wouldn't say Anya was full of crap all the time. She however, for better or worse does speak her mind. In this case, I don't agree with her.

Since i havent gave my opinion yet ^-^ .
I would also say being chosen to be a slayer isnt lucky, buffy herself has said she has wished over and over that she wasnt chosen.
I think because Anya speaks her mind, she doesnt know when to shut up, there are no grey areas with her, she sees everything black and white, and it causes her to say stupid things, plus i think things were heated at the time, and that added to anya's abrupt'ness probably isnt a good combination.
