Is a member of a band going solo the end of the band? Do you think its a good idea for members to do it? It most often happens with the leads and mostly they have good success, but the bands then seem to suffer and break up because the singers want to continue other things. Is this fair to the band?
Look at Gwen Stefani - she's had success solo, but what happened to No Doubt? Are they going to get back together?
Look at Beyonce and co - Destiny's Child reuinites for one more album, then splits.
Justin Timberlake - where's N'Sync now?
Some soloists have gone back to their bands. It seems to work easier for rock artists :dunno: Daniel Johns had his side project and now Silverchair are back together with an album coming out. Dave Grohl has various projects but sticks with Foo Fighters.
So what are everyone's opinions on this?

I think it works easier for rock artists, too, I don't know why - but they seem to stay successful solo and with their band. Gwen Stefani, even though she's successful money wise, I think her music has gone waaay down. I loved No Doubt, but I cannot stand any of her solo songs. As for JT, I think he's a lot better off without N'Sync, but what are they doing now ... I don't know. I don't know though, I think it depends on why they went solo. If they broke up because of fighting, it might now work out well, but if it's just a happy go-lucky decision, then it works out fine. Who knows?

A lot go solo because they want to either try new things or want a break (or fame on their own accord like Beyonce ) But some I think go on their own temporarily because of musical differences - Daniel Johns and Bernhard Fanning (Powderfinger) did their own work as the music they had written didn't fit the style of their bands. Both are still loyal to their bands though. JT has done better on his own, but he was only supposedly taking a brief break from the band - and well.. his leaving made the band disappear.

I guess a lot of the time they figure that too many chefs are ruining the stew, or whatever. If you have your own ideas, and you don't feel that the band is presenting those, that can lead to them going solo...
In most cases, I think the better stuff comes from the band. But not every case, though. When Robbie Williams went solo, I'm sure he was thinking As my soul heals the shame, I will grow old through this pain, Lord I'm doing all I can, To be a better man

I don't think it's fair to the band, since one member is leaving to make sucess by themselves. However, if the person feels they are being held back by the band, then what is the band going to do? Besides, sometimes bands break up for fights, and then everyone goes off to do their own thing. Also, sometimes the band are just over. However, bands seem to die after a member is lost, and I don't think that's fair to the rest of the members or the fans .

I think it gets to a point bands want to target difefrent audiences, take Blue for example, they all broke up, all released singles, they arent even that popular now, as solo artists.
I think if your not happy in your band, you have no right to be there, you lose interest in the band, the music. Lets face it, Would you want someone in the band who would ditch the rest? the sugababes have reformed Tonnes of times! all because the only original chick owns the rights to the name sugababes.

I wonder if part of it isn't how the band was formed. If these are people who have, most of them at least, been friends over the years and decided together to start their own band, I think it's more likely that the band will stick together, even if someone also has a solo career. If 4 or 5 people were just stuck together by studios or auditions of various sorts (as INXS and Pussycat Dolls have done recently with their shows), I wonder if it isn't harder on the members of the band to stick together, as you can't ensure everyone will get along after throwing them together like that.

Mike Shinoda (sp?) has a side project with Fort Minor but Linkin Park is still together. In fact, they will be releasing a new album soon. It's odd how rock artists can do many things with different people but still manage to come back to their original band and still rock - but it doesn't happen to boy/girlbands. To me, going solo spells the end of a band (girl/boyband especially). If they do get back together, they won't be as great as before (see the Backstreet Boys). Some singers are awesome when they go solo. Like Justin Timberlake. I prefer him solo than in the band but some singers just can't make it on their own even though they may be the better singer in the same band (JC Chasez anyone?). It's a mystery how all these works. Some singers are great in a band but suck when solo while others are the opposite. Ah well. As long as they are making good music and not going down the same path as Britney, I'm happy. So I'll try not to think about these things too much.

Ooh I just thought of the lead singer of Tool, Maynard something or other, he is still with Tool but also has A Perfect Circle and both bands are successful. He also has so many other solo projects going on. So I definitely think it's possible for members to split and do their own thing or join other bands too.

Yeh I agree with most of whats been said, its a shame for the fans and some other members of the band but if the lead singer isn't happy then they are always going to leave.
I think its really cool how the sugababes have always been able to bring someone in when one member leaves and still be sucessful, the last girl that left I think might actually have a decent career. Not so lucky was Brian McFadden who's spent the last 4/5 years watching his former band having sucess and him being ripped apart by the media
Am I right in thinking Chris Martin is leaving Coldplay soon?

Am I right in thinking Chris Martin is leaving Coldplay soon? That was the rumour when it was announced that he had a side project going on but it wasn't true. He does have a side project (he's working with some techno/dance group I think) but isn't leaving the band. They are releasing their new album in June and then going on tour. It's pretty common to think someone is leaving their band when they are doing something else on the side. I usually think that way too.
