Have you guys heard about this miniseries? I'm looking forward to it because I'm a huge fan of all the Oz books; I love sci fi stuff; and, well, Zooey Deschanel is one of the world's most beautiful women. Basically, this is a sci-fi retelling of The Wizard of Oz. Zoey plays a character named DG (Dorothy Gale), who finds herself trapped in the Outer Zone (OZ). The titular Tin Man is a character named Cain, who is a police officer (referred to in the Outer Zone) as "Tin Men", who is seeking revenge for damage done to his heart. The other characters featured in the miniseries are Glitch - a man with half a brain (the Scarecrow); Raw, who is a beast-like man who lacks confidence (the lion); and the Mystic Man (the Wizard). So far, aside from Zooey, Alan Cumming has been cast as Glitch, and Richard Dreyfuss has been cast as the Mystic Man. The series definitely looks interesting, though there have been a lot of bad "reimaginings" of Oz, so this could potentially fall into that trap. That said, the cast (so far) looks great, and it's written by Steven Long Mitchell and Craig W Van Sickle, who created The Pretender, so that will hopefully be a good thing.

I'm a big fan of the Oz books as well, so I'm a little iffy on this. It seems pretty out there. I might give it a try though. Do you know what channel it'll be shown on?

A quick Wikipedia search says that it will be on the Sci Fi Channel.
Generally, I would be really iffy about it, but there's some great talent involved, so I'll give it a shot.

So this just started on the Sci-Fi channel. (I think? Unless I'm way behind). Has anyone seen any episodes?

Is it going to air on Foxtel's Sci-Fi channel? I'm interested in it...

Possibly. But our Sci-Fi Channel isn't known for original shows, though.

It sounds good to me except WHY IS THE TIN MAN THE BAD GUY?? That annoys me edit - or is he the good guy seeking revenge against the bad guys? If so my objection is removed

From my understanding, the Tin Man is a good guy out for revenge against the bad guys. I haven't seen an episode, though, so I could be wrong.

So apparently this was only 3 episodes! I knew it was a mini series, but that's quite mini!

Yeah, it was three episodes, though each episode was two hours long (before ads). It's out on DVD in the States in March, so I'll probably import it. There are some mild spoilers in the linked article, but it says that there is a possibility that it could go to a full series.

I caught it when it was on a month or two or so back. I loved it! I'm not sure I want to be spoiled, so I won't bother with the article, but the idea of it becoming a full series sounds nice. I liked that it was a future Oz. So, while it was playing into a lot of the same threads that "The Wizard of Oz" and "Wicked" (from what I understand of it) are using, it was unique and its own entity.

I'm glad to hear it, Marie. It really looks as though it's kept the essence and timelessness of Oz, even if the setting's changed quite a bit. The show apparently rated through the roof, which bodes well for a return. It also means, if good, it was suitably rewarded.

I've finished watching it, and I have to say it was really enjoyable. Plot-wise, it was a real departure from the books/movie, but the tone of it really fits with the books. It bugs me that it was set in "the Outer Zone", rather than Oz itself, especially considering that the world isn't a huge departure (far less of one than I was expecting) from what we saw in the books (and it does kind of link into the Oz "continuity"). It managed to incorporate various bits and pieces from the books and movie, which was cool to see.
I'd definitely recommend it, but don't expect it to follow the plot of any particular book or the movie.

It was pretty interesting. I enjoyed it, but it got pretty lengthy in some parts.
Anybody see previews for the new Alice show that's by the same makers of Tin Man?? Looks pretty interesting and actually better than Tin Man. It airs in the US (not sure about other countries) December 8th I believe on SyFy.

I heard about the Alice one. Might catch it if it's on here.
I saw the first ep of Tin Man last week. Didn't realise they were showing it here until I turned it on halfway through. I couldn't get into it. Not my kind of show.

I watched the first half with Seanie, we both enjoyed it. Will comment more when I finish it but did anyone else end up seeing it? Thoughts?
