I see what you mean about the conventions, but I suppose I was refering to the 'holding hands' part. Gunn/Fred, Xander/Anya, Willow/Tara, Willow/Oz, even Buffy and Angel in a way all had that convention, they were well dating but Wesley and Buffy could hardly admit their feelings for Lilah and Spike respectively for the most part. Angel was Buffy's boyfriend, she stated it and even talked about breaking up in the conventional sense but Spike was never really Buffy's boyfriend, she even stated it to Angel in Chosen and that's what I found interesting: there was never that constant even her 'I love you was put up to scrutiny and that mystery sits fine with me. Although I liked how the other relationships played out this went beyond the usual "I love you and you love me, let's date" type of thing and that's the part I get and like about Spuffy. They were never truly dating like the other examples I gave but the connection and the passion was undeniable.

I was never a huge Spuffy fan, until I most recently watched all the seasons again. Now I love them. I used to hate what happened in season six, but now I like it, simply because it is a good basis to see how much their relationship grew in later seasons. Like Beck said, the "Touched" speech always get me too. I also must agree that James and Sarah had great chemistry.
However, I always wondered, did Buffy love Spike? I know he didn't believe her when she said it, but that doesn't prove it wasn't true. What do you guys think?

I think Buffy loved Spike but she wasn't in love with him. She cared deeply about him. That's evident, as is how much he cared for her. I think she would always want to see him well, happy, safe, as you would with a close friend. However, as much as I'm a fan of Spuffy, I didn't have the impression at the end of Season 7 that he was the one person she wanted to be with for the rest of her life.
Who knows what may yet have come, though?

She said it because he was about to die, and she did love him. But I agree, she wasn't in love with him. It was probably a bit more than just friendship for her, but she wasn't in love with him. She may have come to be, but she wasn't then.

Agreed.
I always believed that she loved Spike but was never in love with him. Even after watching the series again and again, I still believe it. And I think even Spike knew that she was never in love with him, no matter how hard he tried to convince himself and her.

I think she was starting to be, and that started the night she spent with him when he gave her back her confidence. I don't think Buffy was ever the kind of girl to say it without meaning it, even with him about to die.
