She loves Serenity and the crew, but I think she'd feel too confined if she spent all her time there. I think she'd need some time on her own, doing her own thing.

As much as i would love them to be together- they are one of my favourite TV 'couples' ever - i don't know how it would work. I really doubt Mal would want his partner continuing to be a companion and i don't think Inara would want to continue with her work if she was with Mal anyway I don't see her as the idle kind so what would she do? Go on jobs with Jayne and Zoe? Work in the engine room with Kaylee?

I don't see her doing that kind of work, but she wouldn't want to be idle either. She'd have to find something she loved. Unless, she's a qualified pilot...

Can you fly a shuttle without being qualified? Probably not...maybe she could be like Serenity's cab driver.

I could see her helping Simon out in the infirmary. There's always something she could do. She wouldn't have to have a specific job.

I can imagine that shuttle flying and actual spaceship flying is completely different. Like Cars and Lorries so im not sure she could replace Wash. Just pretty much a "go where she is needed" character is what Inara would become which may have worked for Book i doubt it would work for her.

Well she doesn't really need to replace Wash, River and Mal seemed to be handling it for the time being.

Come to think of it, Inara can still remain as a companion but not do all the companion duties (like having clients, etc). The main reason for having Inara on board in the first place is so that the ship and crew and go to certain places. So she still can be part of the crew and be useful by just being that figure. And Mal would be happy as she won't be entertaining clients but just him. It could work.

That's assuming that she doesn't lose her Companion license or something. Maybe someone should release a "Companions Guide" so we can read up on all the rules.

Well, she doesn't have to come out and say she's not entertaining clients anymore. Just pretend that she is. ;D But that would just pose a lot more problems in the long run when someone wants to be entertained by her and doesn't get it.

Yeah, that's exactly it. Who knows, they may have customer satisfaction surveys, and she'll be in trouble for certain.

I would have liked to see them hook up in the movie but I don't think it was needed, they made it clear to each otehr what their feelings were and I thought that was quite a nice end to them.
I'm not sure that a companion who hasn't actively had companions in months or years would be considered as high standing . So she would definitely lose her position in that way.
