Gunn's sister got vamped and he was the one who dusted her, after that he got a vampire-complex. Xander's friend got vamped and Xander dusted him, after that he started disliking vampires.
The attitude. Both are attitude boys, both snarky and sharp.
They don't trust vampires and look at life in black and white view.
Both are underestimated by their friends. To his friends, Gunn is only the muscle and to his friends Xander is only the loyal friend.
Both are insecure about their value in the group. Gunn in Conviction and Xander in The Zeppo.
There are more I guess but this thought just hit me yesterday when I was watching Angel's Players and God I can see Xander instead of Gunn in that episode except that Gunn is a better fighter.

well to be fair to gunn he had hated vampires for along time before his sister was turned and wether that made his hatred for vampires even more intense im not sure as after that happened he left the whole vampire slaying gang to join angel inc which was a more well rounded organization xander on the other hand had never seen a vampire before when his best friend was killed so wether that gave him an even more intense dislike to them than if this had not happened we will never know
i agree with you whole heartedly about the underestimation of them by their friends and their very obvious insecurities

well yeh when you spell it out they do have similar character traits and again the same could be made with Fred and Willow only to a lesser extent.
But I wouldn't go as far as to say they were exactly the same but perhaps Joss was influenced by what he was writting for Xander in Season 3 and this transfered to Gunn a little

I didn't really like that Gunn felt useless in the Fang Gang, I mean I see why Xander felt like that, but Gunn?!
Hello, you are the muscle! At least that's something!

If you're talking about the role Gunn plays in the Fang Gang and compare it to the role that Xander plays in the Scoobies, I don't think they are very similar. And as for the attitude, Gunn is very different from Xander. Gunn plays by his own rules and doesn't play well with others. Which isn't like Xander at all. So if you think about it that way, I don't think Gunn is a lot like Xander or reminds me of Xander. They have some similarities but not enough to remind me of each other.
