In the spirit of the recent Oscars, I got reminded of this thread which I started in BWF a long time ago. I doubt I started it here.
Anyway...we all know that the Jossverse has many great and awesome actors and actresses. And I'm sure a couple of them should have at least won an Emmy or a Golden Globes for their work on their respective shows. But are they good enough to win an Oscar? Who do you see winning an Oscar 5-10 years down the road?
And how about Joss Whedon? Do you think he's brilliant enough to direct/write a movie that will get him an Oscar?
For me, I feel that Joss has the chops to win an Oscar. I think in the not so distant future, he will make a great film that will get him the recognition he deserves.
As for the actor/actresses...I'm not so sure. I always hope and wish that SMG will win it one day - that is if she stops being in blah movies. I think she has the potential to be an Oscar-winning actress if she starts being in films that gets noticed and don't bomb in the box office. To me, I feel SMG is probably the only one who would get that far.
Thoughts?

Hilary Swank doesn't count?? Or just the movie doesn't? Well Joss has already been nominated so i'd say he's the best bet. Acting wise i don't know I think SMG really has no shot at all. She is a decent actress and nothing more. ASH or Marsters would be the most likely chance in my opinion. I think those two are the most talented and have the most range.

Cast-wise, nobody strikes me, really. But that could be contingent on the right role and director, and what they bring out of them. I think Joss is capable of winning a screenplay one, but I don't think he's really a talented enough director. But for all we know, if Serenity had a bigger budget, he could have created a sweeping epic.

If Joss gets his wish and directs the seventh HP film then he will probs get an Oscar for that. Like with LotR they waited until the final film before handing out all those gongs and may be doing the same this time round.

Really? You think the HP movies are Oscar worthy?
I think SMG has great potential. Tony Head is fabulous and could easily get an Academy Award, imo.

I think the seventh one will have a good chance.

It's that type of thing that really brings the Oscars into question for me. There seem like too many times they've done things in a particular way, rather than simply who deserves it.
A Joss Whedon Harry Potter movie would be interesting, though.

Lord of the Rings deserved it, though. I would love for Joss to direct the last HP movie. I think Aly Hannigan is really great, too, but I don't know if she wants to stick to TV or not.

i think A.S.H could possibly win an oscar in the future, i can see him being on of those actors who get offered really good parts when he's older like Ian Mckellan

You know, I'm not too sure about Marsters. Sometimes I feel he's a little bit overrated. But then again, I've never seen him in anything else except in the role of Spike so I might change my mind if I see him in something else.

It's interesting, while I'm not a huge fan of the movie, I can see why it got the Oscar. But it does seem like the Oscar was for all three movies, rather than RotK on its own. Anthony Stewart Head is definitely capable, and I think James Marsters could possibly get something if someone would trust him with the right kind of role.

Certainly Joss is Oscar worthy in writing. Since he's only directed one movie it's a bit hard to judge on that (although I think he did a pretty amazing job for his first movie), however we've seen he's an excellent tv director so I think he could do an Oscar worthy job.
As far as cast there are a few that I think could give an oscar worthy performance if they were just given the chance. I don't think many of them will get that chance. The actors that have the chops are: Anthony Head (totally), Alan Tudyk, Fillion, Eliza Dushku, Geller (maybe), Denisof (maybe), Marsters (maybe, those guys weren't even british you know), and the actors who played Book, Quinten Travers, Darla and Mayor Wilkins. Actually I could see some of the other actors doing it too. There were alot of good actors on his show and all it would take would be the right role for them.
I also think that the Oscars (like most of the movie award shows) are really biased and verge on being rigged. The judges are almost always awarding for the same things every year, unwilliing to accept something different or commend a new take. That's why movies like LotR had such a hard time and why things like Harry Potter will probably never win. That's why I rarely pay much attention to how movies do at Award shows, unless it's judged by fans. Even then sometimes it's a joke.
