Do you guys think the Scooby gang ever grew apart? I was thinking about it a few days ago and realized... They were so close in season 1-3 since they always met in the library and were always around, even Giles. Then in the forth season they were more apart, yet they still managed to work together. They were together in the 5th season, but then came the 6th. Imo they grew apart most in that season. Giles left, and it seemed like they all dealt too much with their own problems and isolated themselves from each other. Then in the 7th season, they were always around each other, yet the potentials kinda of tore them apart, as seen when Xander and Giles help them kick Buffy out . So, my point is, which season do you think they were the closest in? Which season the farthest? What do you think came between them the most? Was it their relationships, or was it after they lost Giles in the 6th season? And the whole time together, was Buffy never as close to them because she was the Slayer?

They were definitely closest in the first three seasons, and somewhat grew apart once they hit college - and let's not forget that in season 4, Spike and Adam were working on pulling them apart. While it was somewhat rectified by the end of the season, they seemed to drift apart more throughout season 6 and in the first half of season 7, though I'd say they were fairly close knit by the end of it...

Yes, I would say that they were closer near the end of season 7. However, their friendship was on the rocks many times. Is their friendship simply weak? Or is it because they lead such strenuous lives?

They were very close in the first three and then also in the fifth. The arrival of Dawn and the more integrated Tara became in that season seemed to bnd everyone together. I mean that opening scene when all of them are on the beach (except Giles as he as planning on leaving). And then when Buffy started training again they became close once more. Season 6 was where it all went slightly awry. Giles left, Buffy felt she could only confide in Spike, Tara left Willow and Xander left Anya. That will definately split a group.

It was kind of inevitable that the scoobies would grow apart. As Glenn pointed out, they were dating within the group. Unless they ALL got married, the breakups would, well, break up the group. Plus the tension of saving the world all the time had to cause some problems between them. They were the only ones to bear that burden-- they'd certainly be prone to some lashing out. And of course, Buffy's loner-ness as the Slayer had to come to a culmination eventually-- this wasn't until the sixth season, but it was kind of inevitable.

IMO, it was the 5th season. As Glenn mentioned, the arrival of Dawn and Tara kind of brought everyone togather. And season 5 kind of dealt with friends and family.

I think that Xander not going to college made a big impact on the group. They were together all the time in high school, now they weren't.

I agree, I think Xander felt left out, the college gossip he couldnt really get involved in, I think probably what spurred him onto going for the job at the college Bar. It was a good idea to have Xander not go to college, he always seemed like the kind of guy who would go straight into work.

I think they were the closest during season 2 and 3 and it's one of the main reason why those two seasons were a joy to watch. I kinda knew that they would drift apart in season 4 because of college and where everyone was in their lives at that point of time (Xander not in school, Giles being unemployed, Buffy and her relationships, Willow and her relationships). But even then, I wouldn't say that that season is when they were the furthest apart. I think season 6 was when they were not close and it did carry on in season 7. The dynamics of the group difinitely changed after season 6. They weren't the same as before.

Yeah, season four drove them apart as they moved in separate directions in their lives. Season six, however, had a whole slew of events which drove them apart, with differing opinions. As opposed to moving in different directions, the characters were getting older, and in many ways grew up differently.
I appreciate season seven, though, for making the effort to bringing them back together. While they have developed into different people, at their core, they're still close friends.

Of course they were bound to drift apart after high school because they don't see each other everyday, all day but at the end of season 4 they did pull back togeather. Then in season 6 they fell apart again but much of season 7 they were very close (physically and emotionally) and I think at the end of the series they were as close as ever.
