All discussions on Season One can go here.
What were everyone's overall opinions on season one? Was it a good opening season? Good villians/storyline/introduction of characters?

I love season one! Unfortunately, it often gets pushed aside for the later seasons, as it has more of the monster-of-the-week feel than the later season arcs.
I thought that the characters and mythology were introduced very well and that Joss was able to show the public what he'd really intended this to be all along. (When I started watching the show, I knew that it and the movie were connected, but I think the show's a better portrayal of what Joss had always intended it to be--largely due to the fact that he had more control.) I enjoyed the monsters from season one and liked the quasi-arc they gave the Master. I think it was a great set up for the rest of the series, and it's still one of my favorites.

I liked season one and I think it was very good considering where it came from. I think that because I came in on Season 2 I was used to the sharper language and imagery and better acting so I can see a very stark contrast between season 1 & 2 but you can't deny the excellent writing and creation.
Season one produced some of the best episodes of the entire series and you just can't put it down for that reason. Sure there we're a few dud monsters one of my pet pevs being Sid the Dummy. But overall it was a very good launch pad.

Season One I thought was really good, though I dont watch it as much as later seasons... the quality both of the acting, story and the actual film quality isn't as good as later seasons. And some of the eps were really poor. It also wasn't as long as the other seasons so the main season arc wasn't explored as well. It did seem very monster of the week, the Master storyline with him being an actual threat wasnt continuous until the last few episodes, or didnt seem to be to me

I think some of the writing in the episodes were top notch as we have seen from the quotes game lol. It was definately monster of the week and some of the eps were terrible. The two i think of are Teachers Pet and I Robot, You Jane. They were so very bad. But then i think the rest of the epsisodes were great. I really love Nightmares. And Angel and Prophecy Girl were also good.
I LOVE the Master. He always makes me laugh, i think he was a great Big Bad and i loved seeing him again in season 3. Wasnt a fan of Xander or Nick Brendan in season one i have to admit. I thought his acting was a bit off for a while but i think it was his first acting gig so that can be forgiven. Giles on the other hand was an amazing character and the acting on his part was great.

All faults can be forgiven as Joss was finding his feet. Is it fair to judge it as it is half a season effectively. There are a few stand alone episode which in my opinion were forgettable. As an exposition, it becomes clear the standard well exceeds other shows of the genre quickly establishing itself a cult show. However like I said, it shows that this is the beginning as the overall production quality got better as the show proceeded? Is this Joss' fault? Of course not, but I suppose I'm judging it in relative terms. To say give it full marks is to undermine the acheivement of Seasons 2 and 3 which I believe exceed season 1.
A very strong opening season though.

I think season one is a great start. It's obviously good enough that we kept watching! It's pretty corny - got kinda of a B-grade horror movie feel to it, and I love it.

Season one suffered from a lot of teething problems, and had some really crappy episodes. That said, it was good enough to keep me watching, and was still better than most stuff on TV. That said, I wouldn't call it the greatest season of Buffy by any stretch of the imagination.

Season 1 is the poorest of the seasons but it can be forgiven as it's the first season and there were only 12 episodes. The show was still finding its footing at that time.
If the season was 22 eps long, I think it would have gone better. The whole Master arc was crammed into 12 eps and, hence, everything was rushed. Joss should have fleshed out the arc out into season 2 if 22 eps wasn't possible.
There were some good episodes like Angel, Nightmares and Prophesy Girl so it wasn't all that bad.

The puppet Show another awesome yet creepy episode, living dummy haha only on buffy!.
Nightmares was also great!

I don't know if the reduced length of season 1 was so responsible for it being weaker than the others. I think that as a new show, it took a little while to find it's feet, and for the creators to get comfortable with the universe.

I think season one was great. Although the storylines-acting-filming wasnt the best it could be it was still ptrtty good. I mean it was 1997 when it was made so we have gotten better graphics and stuff now.
Its a shame it didnt last longer. The master story line was great but it could have been longer. Buffy could have had a bigger fighting sceen with him. But over all it was a good season its in my top 5

Although season one was pretty random, I still loved it, and I feel it was a great beginning. I liked the introduction of Buffy and Willow, but I didn't really like Xander too much. I found it annoying when Xander was always jealous of Buffy. I loved the introduction of Angel, though Buffy and Angel fell in love pretty fast lol. As for the villians and storylines, those were good as well. The Master, although some what cheap, was a pretty good introduction villian. It was interesting to see a powerful vampire, and it was even better seeing Buffy come back and dust him .

Yeah, the first season always gives the actors/actresses time to adjust to their role and really get into the character- everyone on the show got better at their role I think. And the Master was funny...did he remind anyone else of the Grinch? .

I agree that the Master was funny, but he didn't remind me of the Grinch, though.

I liked the Master but he ended up being fairly lame So much more could have been done with him, but I suppose they only had half the time with him in season 1. However there were too many monster of the week eps, I think the master should have been released for a whole episode. That said, I loved Prophecy Girl
