(I searched for it, but I'm sorry if there's already a thread on this) All right, I've had a question about this episode for quite some time. In the Chosen collection's episode list, there is Joss' top ten favorite episodes. Joss has "Earshot" on there, and says that it has a mission statement for the show. I figure it has to be something Buffy says to Jonathon in the clocktower, maybe that everyone is ignoring his pain because they're too busy with their own? but I don't know. Anyone have any idea what the mission statement is?

The episode exemplifies how tough growing up and highschool are, which is what Buffy is all about. My thoughts on this are that it's more thematic, rather than something to do with the plot.

Ohhh... see that makes a lot of sense. I was thinking that it was an actual line from the episode that was the mission statement.

The statement is in the episode, Buffy's speech to Jonathon -
My life happens to, on occasion, suck beyond the telling of it. Sometimes more than I can handle. And it's not just mine. Every single person down there is ignoring your pain because they're too busy with their own.
The beautiful ones. The popular ones. The guys that pick on you. Everyone.
If you could hear what they were feeling. The loneliness. The confusion. It looks quiet down there. It's not. It's deafening.
Life is hard, on everyone. School is hard on everyone. Thats what the statement is about.

Gosh this is a good episode. Good work by Danny Strong too. I miss Buffy episodes like this one, the group is so tight.

I think that would have been where Joss realised what a star Jonathan could become. Danny Strong really showed that he can act, and is more than that funny little guy. I loved the episode. I also liked that those of us in Australia got to see it before the US, thanks to post-Columbine censorship.

I thought it was a good idea to postpone the airing of Earshot in America after the Columbine tragedy, personally. Anyways, Bernie and I watched this one last night. So many funny thoughts Buffy hears, though I hate the way Cordelia is shown in this episode. Xander too. Cordelia is not that idiotic and shallow, we've seen that through her actions in several episodes, even in Earshot she is still helping. Fair enough she's say those things, but she would have more depth in her thoughts Xander was also shown stupidly, asking those girls the dating questions I can imagine Xander doing, though its stupid, but forgetting to find Jonathon who he thinks is about to kill people for Jello? As if.

Thanks, Beck, for the statement. "Earshot" was a really good episode IMO. And I'm also really glad they decided to postpone the episode. It wouldn't have been appropriate after Columbine. And Beck, I agree that the jello thing was a bit unrealistic, but it's a good thing he did that... it revealed the lunch lady as the real culprit.

I thought it was a good idea to postpone the airing of Earshot in America after the Columbine tragedy, personally. I agree that the initial air date would have been inappropriate, but I think they kept it off US screens for a bit too long, personally. It also got a bad wrap for being an episode that made light of the situation in some circles, by people who didn't realise that it was filmed before.

Yes, the postpone was an excellent choice on Joss Whedon's part. Beck, you're right. Xander and Cordelia were shown as very idiotic and shallow, perhaps for humor purposes I also loved this episode, and I think the theme from it which is in the whole show was that, "Every single person down there is ignoring your pain because they're too busy with their own." (as Beck said), it showed that life is hard on everyone, which is what the whole show was about.

Earshot could have been Alot better written (For Cordy/Xander) I agree about Cordy and Xander, it seemed rather contradictive , We have seen deeper into there personalities and we know they arent that moronic. I agree Danny Strong really shone in this Episode, and I think Buff's speech to Jonathon was very well written, I think her entire dialogue towards Jonathon in the tower was very well written. and I loved the addition of that Girl, who was jealous because buffy *Knew* all the answers, and when buffy done her fancy stuff to get up to the tower, the Chick says "I couldve done that"

All great moments, Nico. Especially the conversation, it was really heartfelt. Yes, the postpone was an excellent choice on Joss Whedon's part. Actually, I'm quite certain that was the network's decision, not Joss's.

Yeah I would Guess Joss doesnt get much say on when the episodes are shown.
I think the episode was good on the viepoint of the overall idea, and Buffys change from enjoying the power to it killing her.

I really thought from Buffy's perspective, the episode was great. It was a nice take on hearing peoples thoughts isn't as good as it might seem, and I've seen a few similar takes since then. I still think Earshot did it best.
As for Joss not having much say as to when episodes air, look at the Firefly fiasco in the US.
