i have heard many different opinions on this matter some say that spike went to get his soul restored and his words "you will get what you deserve" hinted to him wanting to be the perfect man for her
however many people believe that no matter how much he thought he loved buffy his vampire needs and evilness sent him to Africa to get his chip removed so buffy would "get what she deserved" meaning a very painful death at his hands
i think he went to become evil again as the vampire in him out weighed his "love"
what do you think

He went to get his soul. So says Joss. So it is. Spike says himself that he went to get his soul, it was a plot twist. We were meant to think he was going to get his chip removed, but he wasn't.

Spike does say that he went to get his soul back but can you imagine him going up to buffy and saying "hey buffy i went to africa to get my chip removed so i could kill you painfully but as it happens i got my soul restored, please love me!" lol

No he wouldn't say that, but Spike would not lie to Buffy either. He told her he went to get his soul and he wasn't lying. As confirmed by Joss Even discarding Joss' confirmation, it makes less sense that Spike would go to a demon like that to get his chip removed. Why not seek out the military again?

I agree that he was going to get a soul.
But Beck you said he'd seek out the millertary to get the chip removed but I don't think he'd trust them enough, they'd probaby recapture him again and some other experiment. Spike is too smart to do that again

No. He definately went to get his soul. He was angry Buffy wouldn't accept him in his 'vampiric' state, so he said he'd be 'make me what I was'- human.

Spike could have killed Buffy anyway, so he wouldn't have needed to remove the chip right? Am I missing something? Episode Smashed?

I agree with Kana and Beck. It makes no sense that Spike would see a demon simply to remove his chip. He may not have trusted the military, but I'm sure there were less trying ways to get it removed.
And we've seen Spike be able to attack Buffy sans chip, so again, if all he wanted was to get back at Buffy--maybe kill her--there was no reason to go see the demon.
I believe he went to get his soul returned. That's what I believed when it first aired, and as of yet I've not seen a successful argument to make me believe otherwise. And, since Joss says that's what happened, that's the final nail in the coffin for me.

The removal of the chip wouldnt be so he could hurt Buffy as i do remember that he could. But to be as he was, able to hunt and kill and to inflict pain. Also it wouldnt be for the chip, but to remove his feelings for the Slayer. But if Joss said so then that is all that is needed.

I think that it was made so that we were to think thats what Spike wanted, but he said in season 7 that he went there to get his soul. Anymore opinions?

Spike said he went to get his soul, and I don't think he'd lie about it.
Joss later confirmed that, too.
Personally, I don't see why there was ever any doubt about it, though. Spike's use of words and demeanor, to me, was a fairly obvious red herring, with the soul bit being a twist (otherwise, it wouldn't have been as effective a moment).

It actually not very good writing, especially the whole 'Bitch is going to see a change', it's too forced.

I think he went ot get his soul back but as we saw in Season 7, he didn't understand what comes with it. He didn't understand the pain that came with the soul or the guilt or anything else. He may have fought for it, but it's not so special when you think about it like that.
But as much as I think he did go for the soul, I think it would have made better TV if he had gone for his chip removed. It just would have made season 7 better if it was The First and Spike(instead of Caleb) vs the scoobies. Think of it. Spike's slayer killing history and all those potentials that needed to be whacked for the first. That's bloody good TV IMO.

I think Spike has been threw to much to have had him take his chip out, (if they had gone in that angle) I mean, Dawn meant alot to him, he fell in love with the slayer, all After he got his chip, he worked alongside the scoobies for years, the idea of him suddenly working with the first to end the slayer line, seems a little farfetched to me.
I also liked seeing how Spike reacted to having his Soul, in comparison to Angel, was interesting to watch. Though up until he got his jacket back he wasnt much fun to watch.

Um yeah, Spike suddenly working with the First against the scoobies would have made no sense at all. No Spike didn't know how bad having a soul would be at first, but he did know it would make him a better person. So it was a noble and good thing to do imo

Whoa whoa whoa. I'm not a script writer people. If I had known a silly little suggestion would get such a bad press, I wouldn't have said anything.
I agree with you Beck, it was a noble and good thing to do but considering that Spike didn't know the full affect of what the soul would do, it isn't the be all and end all of good deeds imo. I have seen greater deeds on the shows than Spike getting his soul.

Not bad press, just disagreement Oh it definitely wasn't the best deed done on the show, but then thats an impossible thing to judge (could make an interesting thread though). But for an unsoulled creature to want to become a better man, thats a fairly big thing. I do think Spike thought it would be a good thing, and come with no bad, but it would be impossible for an unsoulled being to understand what a conscience and soul would do to him. As he says to Buffy later, it was only with a soul that he realised how badly she had treated him in their brief relationship during season 6. He was incapable pre-soul of understanding what it would do to him - even if Angel had told him, I doubt he could have known. In fact he would possibly have thought Angel was just trying to talk him out of it, so Spike's comment that Angel should have warned him was a bit silly on Spike's behalf
