Ok so at Dragon Con basically all we did was talk non stop abut Buffy + Angel and whilst I was there an interesting comment came up.
Do we really know if it was the actual ghost of Darla that appeared to Connor when he is going to kill that girl or is it just the PTB trying to stop him from doing it and using the most powerful vessel (his mother) talk him around?
I hadn't thought about this until this was brought up + I though the interesting part was that Julie Benz had said she wasn't entirely sure wether it was Darla or the PTB!!
Had anyone else thought this or have any opinion?

I hadn't really thought about it. I don't think it was really Darla though. So basically that just leaves the PTB.

I thought that it was Darla that was talking to Conner, but that it was the PTB that sent her to him.

yeh thats what I originally thought too, but hearing that Julie Benz wasn't entirely sure made me think it could just be a clever ploy from Joss.

PTB in the form of Darla. Has anyone considered that Julie Benz is just dumb?

Just saw this thread. Good one! I think the actual answer comes in Inside Out but I'm not sure. When Darla first appears Connor says it isn't her but she says that she has Darla's memories, feelings etc and that isn't that what makes a person. I think it was the Ptb breating an astral projection of Darla to help Connor but it wasn't really her. Also, why would the Ptb use Darla when she is from hell? They wouldn't. This question kind of ties in with a question I have asked on other boards: Was it really Cordelia in You're Welcome?

I do think, from a spiritual point of view, That it's Darla's spirit just hovering around, trying to protect the ONE thing that she ever cared about in her life. The PTB, imo, had no power over Darla. They did work and protect everything that surrounded the world of Angel. If it was really the PTB, then they would have sent her when he was throwing Angel down the ocean, or stopping whatever he was doing with "Cordelia" to bring about Jasmine. Darla has redeemed herself by sacrificing her existence for the sake of Connor. She earned the right to be there , at least once , for her son, the one she shared a soul with. Through Connor's soul, Darla knew what feeling means. Same thing with Cordelia. I do believe it was her in You're Welcome, only because Angel means so much to her, and she needed to be there for him in his time of need, in his darkest moment. She earned that right... Again, it's from a spiritual point of view, just another fresh idea about the matter.

I thought Darla's appearance was because of the PTB. They brought her essence back to talk to Conner. For some reason I always suspected that they were involved, but I'm not sure why - maybe because Darla's a vampire, with no soul, and ergo, essence to come back on it's own.
I never thought that it was simply the PTB appearing in her form, but I may have to rewatch the episode and see...

I think it was Darla, but not vampy Darla... vampy Darla doesn't have a soul, but got a taste of Connor's soul when she was pregnant with him, leading her to be more or less soul having... making her soul which was watching helplessly as her body generally misbehaved with demon inside quite happy and glad... and so said soul, when given the go-ahead by the PTB, having all the memories of Darla both good and bad, was able to go and visit with Connor and try to influence him.
Make sense???!!! That's what I think, anyway, even if it's not too black and white.

I thought it was Darla, but the Darla who loved Connor. The PTB would definitely want someone to stop Connor, but they never really do anything . They might have sent Darla, but if they had "asked" her to do it, then I think she would have. She staked herself for Connor, and I think she didn't want that to be in vain. I think the more important question is: why didn't Connor listen to her?

Connor never knew Darla, and let's face it - he was pretty messed up...

They had already established Conner's hatred for magic. Which is understandable due to what happened to him. And then with the manipulation of the only person he really felt for once Holtz had gone, Cordelia, played on that to make him believe it to be a magical message sent by Angel inc. Ive heard the theory about the First becoming Darla because Jasmine's takeover wold get in the way of its own but that is too far fetched for me
