Split from: A+Hole+in+the+World+-+Bleh%3FA lot of people seem to rate A Hole in the World highly and that Fred's death was emotional and sad and tragic. Blah blah blah. I found it way too drawn out and by the time it happened, I was thinking finally. Its not that I don't like Fred, I did. But I couldn't feel the sympathy when it was dragged out and over done as I felt it was. I could have sworn there was a thread on Shells but after going through this section and Dead Threads, I'm coming up with nothing. Anyway, the comments made about A Hole in the World made me think of Shells, which I found to be a better episode. While I seem to like AHITW more than most people on here, Shells really got to me. I really liked the futile attempts to save Fred, something that proves to be hopeless for the characters. Any thoughts?

I loved the eps. I especially liked the scenes between Illyria and Wes as the find a connection in their mutual loss. With their respective worlds gone they attempt to live on in the hope that their find meaning in their lives once more.
I liked that Angel wasn't prepared to accept that Fred had simply died. I believe he did the right thing, he did everything he could without forsaking mankind.

I agree completely. And I really think the stuff with Angel trying everything to save Fred was wonderful. He knew it was futile, but wasn't willing to accept it. It was painful to watch, but it really worked for me.

I prefer Shells over AHITW. AHITW was great but Shells was more heavier and compelling to watch. Shells was much sadder to watch too, in my opinion, even with Fred's death in AHITW.
And I think Illyria's character made Shells more interesting as well.

Illyria's introduction did make "Shells" interesting. I think a lot of my enjoyment of the episode is that it looks at the ramifications of death for the loved ones, as opposed to the death itself.

To me its how people should rally round after the death of someone they we're so close too. Ok its not literally what other people do in the sense that Angel is a supernatural show after all, but the same feelings and premise are there, it means a lot that they tried everything and refused to give up

Yeah, definitely. It was a family who'd drifted apart over the past year coming together over the loss of a loved one. They tried everything within their power to save her, knowing it wasn't going to work - but they still had to try it, refusing to accept it.
