Deathly Hallows Split In Two

It's official! The LA Times has confirmed that Deathly Hallows will be split into two films AND will be directed by OOTP and HBP director David Yates.

Producer David Heyman said the decision was made with some anxiety and only after considerable deliberations. The producer joked that "while my wife and Warner Brothers were pleased" to hear that the Potter movie magic will continue into the next decade, he himself fretted that the cynical observers would see the decision as a purely mercenary move.

"I swear to you it was born out of purely creative reasons," Heyman said during an interview in a converted airplane factory outside London that has been home base to all of the "Potter" productions. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book. You can remove scenes of Ron playing quidditch from the fifth book, and you can remove Hermione and S.P.E.W. [Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare] and those subplots . . . but with the seventh, that can't be done."

Heyman said he approached Rowling with some trepidation about the strategy but found that she signed off on its logic rather quickly. "I went to Jo and she was cool with it," Heyman said, "and that was quite a relief."

What do you guys think about this? Are you for or against it?

For me, if they were planning on splitting the seventh then why didnt they consider splitting the fifth. That book was huge and packed full of information. I mean they cut out finding the horcrux in the house of Black for crying out loud.

I agree I don't know how two movies will work... The second one will be action packed and the first not so much. I wonder if they will move some of book 6 into the first book 7 movie.

I'm very glad they're making into two movies. That way they can fit everything in it. This book is probably the most important and I don't think anything should be left out.

I'm pleased with this. The Battle of Hogwarts needs to be done really well. IMO they should have split the last three.

I wonder where they'll split it? Maybe when Ron leaves/the silver doe? IIRC, that's about half-way. Or Malfoy Manor? A lot happens in the last bit of the book, you could cut out a lot of the camping scenes.

I haven't read the book, but from what I've heard a lot of the page count is very introspective, rather than action oriented. If that's the case, I question the value of splitting it into two movies, as opposed to earlier books which are apparently more action oriented than Deathly Hallows.

Hopefully it works, but my main concern here is that they are actually doing it because they feel they need an extra movie to tell the story, rather than Warner Bros deciding that an extra movie will just double their box office receipts.

No, it definitely needs to be split. There's so so so much that happens in the last book.

I also don't think it's about the money. If that was the case they would have split movies 5 onwards.

I was so happy when I heard this. I was fretting about them cutting out parts of the book that were - imo - necessary to the story. I had a really bad image of the end fight scene being 10 minutes long and that was it...

but saying that, I would sit through the movie even if it wasnt split, mind you it would need to be about 8 hours long but hey! Whats 8 little hours!!!

Idea: What if it was split when they're at the Lovegoods and Xenophilius says - "Are you referring to the sign of the Deathly Hallows?"
