There are a lot of kids books (and movies out there), many of which are fantasy. And yet, none of them sell anywhere near as many copies, and none seem to have that appeal - not just to children, but also to adults.
So I ask you, what is it about Harry Potter that the world has fallen in love with? Is it the characters, it it the world, or is it simply JK Rowling's words?
Thoughts, people?

I think it's the characters. Like you said there are many books with a fantasy world out there that are good, but not nearly as good as HP. JKR makes you feel for the characters and that, to me, is more important than anything else in a book. It could be the stupidest story, but the author makes you care for the characters that it could be one of the best books.

i know i will proberly get smited for this, but i hate all the characters and i think the books are really poorly written, after saying that i have to add i have read all the books so far and i am dying to read the final one, i just cant wait to see how it all ends. the reason that i started reading them was because my daughter had me reading them to her at bedtime

I don't find it more appealing that other stories I have read. I do enjoy them, and started reading them after my mother made me watch the first movie with her (on DVD - I wasn't interested at all when the movie originally came out).

I haven't read any of the books, but keep telling myself that I will one day. I think the movies are really entertaining, but it doesn't go further than that.
I had no intention of ever watching the movies, but saw the first on DVD out of boredom, and enjoyed it.

You could always get the books on tape or CD and listen to them

I absolutely adore these books and I've spent 10 years reading them. She's just a brilliant storyteller, and she has created such a wonderful world. Her characters are real and flawed. They're really special books, and I look forward to sharing them with my children someday.

I'm not a fan of audio books, Lexicon.
I've noticed from the movies that the universe is very vibrant, Lizard Queen.

Indeed they are. They're maaaaagical!
I was talking to my mum last night about how I considered writing to JKR when I first started reading HP (end of '97). I wish I had, she probably would have sent a reply or something back then. Sadness! Now she's so incredibly busy with everything...not that she wasn't before, but HP has just exploded.
