I've been reading around online about HP the last few days and I was struck by comments that Ginny is a Mary Sue character. What does everyone else think?
Anyone who doesn't know what a Mary Sue is, the wiki description goes - Characters were originally labeled as "Mary Sues" for being portrayed in an overly idealized way and lacking noteworthy or realistic flaws

I don't know if I'd call her a total Mary Sue. She is supposed to be beautiful and a pretty decent witch, but she also rebels. I'm not a huge fan of her character, but I'm sure she has some flaws that I can't think of?

I don't think she's a Mary Sue.
I think she just lacks direction and enough screen time, figuratively speaking.
Everything we see of her is colored by Harry's perspective, so yeah, we're going to see her a bit rosier than she actually is I think. He loves her, so that's just the way it is. But let's not forget we were shown just how weak she could be the first time we ever got to know her. She poured her soul out to an unknown entity and paid for it quite dearly. She's lived her whole life in a house full of boys, and acts out accordingly.
I think the telling moment was on Harry's birthday. I hope I'm not alone in thinking she was ready to give him her virginity because it was all she had to give him. That doesn't seem like a Mary Sue type action to me.

Agree with you Skitty. I think that her birthday present was an extremely revealing moment for her. It was all she had to give him and she wanted him to know how important he was to her. And I have to say i've never seen her as idealized. I just think, like the rest her family (excluding Percy's obvious lapse of judgment), that Ginny is a very good person. Of course I have always been a big fan of hers, and i think Harry and her are very much right together so my opinion might be slightly tainted

I'm not a fan of Ginny's, she annoys me, but I don't think she is a Mary Sue character either.

I thought Zoe from Firefly was more of a Mary Sue ;D
I never gave Ginny much thought to be honest. Though i dont think being influenced by Tom Riddle was a flaw. She was only 11 and older and more powerful wizards have been entranced by the Dark Lord.

It's not that she was INFLUENCED by Tom. It was that she would pour her heart and soul out to an object like that, when she should have known better. And did know better in fact, but just didn't seem to think.
And you think Zoe was a Mary Sue? That's another topic for another time but oh, there will be words on that my friend.

Nope, I don't think she is. Of course, she's one of my favourite characters so perhaps I'm biased. She's not perfect which seems to be a characteristic of MSs.

I've only watched the movies, but she doesn't come across as one. I mean, she's a kid, younger than the rest of them, and she's a relatively minor character.

No, I'd have to say she's not a Mary Sue. She may not have huge sickening flaws but she does have them. Also, we haven't really delved into her character enough to really see her flaws. I think there are some buried in there. Just not as big as Harry's.
