I'm sure everyone gets writers block at times, so what do you do to get out of it? Do you write something else? Not write at all for awhile?

As I said in the Spotlight thread...
Essentially, I find that I have more ideas, etc, when I'm not trying to. Trying to think of ideas can make it difficult, and block the process, but if you're not trying to think of them, that should do the trick.

wowsers TMI Allan! I've had writters block for about 18 months on my Buffy fic But seriously I havn't had the time and when I do I get writers block its an evil circle of pain and desperation. So most of the time I just leave it and eventually forget and other times I read fan fic and try not to rip off what I've read Writers block for academic work is a bit different I think, so I usually watch the West Wing which gets me back into it. Something about the language on the show that inspires me.

When I get writers block on fan fiction, I tend to stop writing for a day or so. If it goes away, then great! However, if it doesn't, then I just force myself to write and get past the hard part. That tends to work for me.
If it is for academic work, then I usually just take a short break and get through it. Not much you can do there.

Usually when I get writer's block, I read my old stuff to get inspiration. I'm a perfectionist. Reading my old stuff would make me go, "I should have done it this way than that" or "Why the hell did I writer this and not that!" So from there a whole new idea develops and I get inspiration to write new materials. Sometimes my muse (whom I named Bob) comes to me whenever I'm in the shower. The hot water helps loads. Does anyone get all panicky when you can't shake off a writer's block? I do. I always think I'm losing my ability to write.

I get wroter's blaock for months at a time. It's so annoying. Lots of times I'll be at the computer and I'll want to write, but it just won't come. So annoying. I end up writing other things sometimes until I get writer's block for them too.
Also if I don't get feedback then I slump into writer's block. When I don't get feedback I think no one is enjoying it, I try to concentrate on making it better and get stuck.

When I get writer's block, I tend to take a break, watch an episode of "Friends", then force myself to write past the block. If I get blocked with academics, I procrastinate. It's not a good habit, but it's what I do.

Does anyone get all panicky when you can't shake off a writer's block? I do. I always think I'm losing my ability to write. I do if I find I have it for more than a couple of days... Though, I'm more inclined to get overly frustrated (and cranky). It's something that will get me snapping at people when they don't deserve it...

I've been trying to get the first act of the next Dominion written, and just can't get it down. I have the episode in my head, but when pen comes to paper (or more accurately, keys to keyboard), I just can't get it out. It's frustrating me!

I know exactly how you feel, Allan. Lately, I have a lot of ideas for Asta running around my head but when I open up the document and want to start typing, the ideas don't come out! Lately, I've been dealing with a lot of crap in RL so I think it's because of that it's hard to get something written down. Might be because I'm too distracted. I hope it would get better when I start writing it with a clear mind. I'm trying not to force myself to write but sometimes it's hard. Good luck with your writer's block, Allan.

Thanks, Irene. I think being distracted by RL could have a little something to do with it. Hopefully I can get past it soon, though.

I'm working on a story that I think will be very good...if I could just write it!! I have the first chapter written and I'm pleased with it--I even posted it here--and I have thoughts, ideas and scenes running through my head, but I just can't get it down. Ugh! It's been two months! I don't know what to do...

I wished I had a cure for writer's block. I've tried everything I know but it still doesn't work. I haven't been writing for about 3 months now.

The only cure I have is forcing myself to write. But that's really difficult to do. That said, if you force yourself to, and it's crap, it's easier to fix it...

There are a lot of time where I force myself to write. And when I do that, things don't come out the way you want them to and I get more frustrated than before.

I find it doesn't come out how I want when I do that either, but when I force myself, it gives me a starting point to rewrite and edit, and get how I want it.

Major case of writer's block lately. Not in general, just with RR. I am SO close to finishing 2.11- seriously, there are 33 pages written, and I just can't find the motivation/inspiration to finish it and continue. The good news is I'm writing poetry and short stories, so at least I've not completley lost my creative juice.
