Keep in mind that they only go after people who can't live with something they have done. If you had done something you could not forgive yourself for, that you struggled to cope with and weren't sure you ever could, would you agree to the doll contract?

Good question and I honestly don't know the answer. Though this makes me wonder what I did that I can't forgive myself for! It's an interesting question and it makes you wonder about the people who 'volunteered' to become a doll. Are they escaping the guilt? Are they cowards for not dealing with it? If I did something I couldn't forgive myself for, I would punish myself for it and the only way to do it is to have the guilt of it hang over my head. Becoming a doll might make it look like I'm escaping from the guilt. So, I really don't know.... :-\

It's not only for doing something guilty is it? You can volunteer to be a doll just to forget the pain for a while, no? Unless they explain more about it in season 2.
I don't know. I think it would be easier if I could remember everything I did as a doll, but to have experienced so much as a doll and not remember, would be too weird for me.

The Dollhouse get people on a volunteer basis and it was easier to target people who want to forget their lives for awhile so it can be anyone who has done something bad or just want to forget their pain. True. Some of the stuff the dolls do are something I would never do myself. So I might be incline to be a doll if I remembered the stuff.

I wouldn't do it. I know I wouldn't remember what I had done as a Doll, but joining up to do things that might not be in my nature to do, and things I wouldn't do if given a choice.... No thanks.

I'm just wondering...as soon as my contract as a doll is up and I go back to my normal life, won't I remember the bad thing I've done?

Yeah I believe so. Isn't that what happened with Mellie?

Naw, they gave her the memories back but not her grief. That what she wanted gone.

Ah ok. I'm a little confused with that. I must watch the season again.

Naw, they gave her the memories back but not her grief. That what she wanted gone. Really?? Then what was that bit when they showed her going to the grave site and crying? Was that just for a bit and then memory erased again? I just watched the season and already forgot.

Yeah I remember that too. I assumed because Ballard released her from her contract early, she didn't get all her memories erased.

that bit were when they were all given back their personalities for one episode, before she released from her contract. She remember her daughter but she were still grateful to Dollhouse for taking her grief. they didnt take her memories. Were like Ballard, he were given back all his memories but not his feelings for Echo.

Aaah gotcha. Well if they take away the grief, that is a bit more compelling in the positives for become a doll.

Agreed.
I wouldn't mind being a doll, if they just take away the painful memories...

But then you might think, isn't the pain we go through what makes us who we are, stronger, etc? So maybe it wouldn't be beneficial to be rid of pain like that ..

Depend what the pain were. There some things be best forgotten if it were possible. Would have to be something real bad to make me agree to it.

Like James said, I guess it depends on what kind of pain. As mentioned before, I would probably 'punish' myself by keeping the pain/guilt over my head. It would also make me learn my lesson. If I didn't have that pain, I might do that crime/whatever again when I'm done being a doll. Even though I have the memory, I wouldn't know whether what I did was good or bad right? Oh man, this is tough to decide!

Seeing how the Dolls glitch so often I would probably decline, but without knowing that... if there were something I couldn't forgive myself for or live with then I might consider it. Besides, from the looks of things once they get you in that room to give you the offer, they badger you until you agree so is it really a choice?

If I were not in a relationship I would do it, wouldn't be a hard decision for me. But as it is it would not be only myself that it concerned.

I was thinking along similar lines to Shaun's thoughts. I'm not in a relationship, but I do have my family. I wouldn't be able to do it. Plus, I do agree that our struggles, grief, etc., are a part of who we are and a part of what moves us along in our process of growing.
