How fussy are you with Use By and Best Before dates? Bernie tends to see "Best Before" as a loose guide and isn't that worried about it but I don't like to use anything that is past either of those dates.

I never use anything after either dates. I just get too paranoid, and don't want to take the risk. I'm not sure if I end up wasting a lot of food, but it's better to be safe I think.

Best before is apparently a "recommendation" not a steadfast rule. It's a rule as far as i'm concerned

I always get confused with the two. But if it's a few days after those dates, I don't mind consuming them. If it's a week or more after, I wouldn't. I never had to worry about those dates though. We always seem to finish the food 'in time'.

How are you confused? Best Before is supposed to be a recommendation that the food will be best before that date, and Use By means that it needs to be used by that date

I'm very strict with the dates. The sell-by date I'm less strict with, though, depending on what type of food it actually is.

For me, it depends on what the food is. If it's chilled food like milk or yoghurt I won't use anything past the used by date. If it is something dry, like rice or cereal, as long as I haven't opened it yet then going a little bit over the best before date is ok. Once dry food is opened it goes stale pretty quick. And I don't leave meat in the freezer for more than 3 months.

We only buy things we KNOW we will eat before the expiration date.
The only things that ever expire for us is milk, eggs & bread but we always have them go way in advance. We don't eat food that has expired but we don't waste it either (because our food never gets past it's expiration date).
Stevens family tried to give us food that his Grandmother bought years ago and the expiration dates went as far back as 1999, Aye, the year and they tried telling us "ohh, they will be okay" seriously, I wanted to punch them for their stupidity.
