BECK: Hello?
Beck’s voice echoed around the empty dining hall as she popped her head in the dark room. She flicked on the lights and an empty room greeted her. Odd, she thought to herself as she gave the dining hall a quick scan before switching the lights off and closing the door behind her. She was sure that Allan asked her to meet her here for a quick cup of coffee at 8pm. She was ten minutes late because she was caught in the middle of another soccer rant from Irene. She loved that girl and all but seriously, there is so much soccer an Australian can take. I might call his room. He might think I stood him up or something, Beck said to herself as she made her way towards her room.
She stopped when she heard a small sound behind one of the closed doors on her right. Going on what she remembered from reading the little brochure that everyone was given, that door led to one of the few storerooms for Housekeeping. The noise came again and this time her attention fell on the crack between the door and the doorframe. Whoever last used the storeroom must have forgotten to shut it properly. And switch off the lights. Maybe they are still in there.
BECK: Hello? Allan?
She has no idea why Allan would be doing in a storeroom but that was the first name that popped into her mind. She took a step closer, a small voice in the back of her head urging her to investigate. She could still hear the noise. It sounded like something was scraping against the wooden floor. It had a rhythm to it too – scrape…scrape…scrape…scrape…
Beck pushed the door open.
BECK: Is anyone in here?
Door bumped against something behind it, preventing Beck from opening it fully. She gave it more force and the door slammed against the heavy object. The force of it caused whatever that was behind the door to move and it fell to the floor with a loud crash. The sound made Beck jump and gasped. Mr. Gordo, the soft toy that all the KAX members shared lay on his side, staring sadly at Beck.
BECK: Mr. Gordo! What are you doing in here? I didn’t know someone brought you here.
Beck took a step inside the storeroom to pick the soft toy up but froze when she saw Mr. Gordo wasn’t alone. Crumpled in a heap on the floor, the front of his shirt soaked with bright red blood and his eyes staring vacantly at her was Allan.
Beck screamed.
Earlier that day…
BECK: Welcome everyone to our first KAX meet-up right here in Tasmania!
Cheers rang out from every KAX member.
