Act Three[/u]
INT. DOMINION BAR, BOB’S ROOM
Bob’s room is cloaked in darkness. Through the shadows, Bob’s figure can barely be seen lying on his back, stirring around. A knock can be heard on his door and Bob’s figure slowly rises. Bob reaches for the wall and ignites a flaming torch, illuminating his room. As the flame flickers to life, Bob’s room is revealed to be simple, comprised predominantly of stone and very similar in appearance to a crypt. A lone ‘N Sync poster is taped to the wall.
Bob, shirtless with dark pants, walks past the poster and toward the door. He opens it and stares blankly as Shell, dressed in her pyjamas, steps inside.
BOB:
What do you want, Shell? You can’t sleep?
SHELL:
My sleep’s been a bit broken of late. I’m a bit worried, you know.
Bob nods his head.
BOB:
Jack and Beck…we’ll find them.
SHELL:
I know, Bob. It doesn’t stop me from worrying.
(beat)
You?
BOB:
I’ve barely slept in weeks. Since…you know.
SHELL:
Yeah. Look, if you need to talk about it…
BOB:
Thanks, but no.
Shell nods her head.
SHELL:
Well, if you
ever decide to open up, we’re all here for you.
(beat)
But that’s not why I’m here. It’s Illyria. I ran into her in the bar, and…
Bob shakes his head almost knowingly.
BOB:
And
what?
SHELL:
She’s gone to pay Hext a visit. She says he can lead her to the Tengu.
Bob shakes his head.
BOB:
Damn it. After what he did to me?
SHELL:
I hate to say it, but he could be our only lead.
BOB:
He
can’t be trusted.
(beat)
Let me get ready. I’m going after her.
Shell nods and turns to leave. She spies Bob’s ‘N Sync poster.
SHELL:
‘N Sync, Bob?
BOB:
I like them.
(beat)
Besides, Joey Fatone is a musical
genius.
INT. ENCHANTADORA DIMENSION, HEXT’S HUT
Hext sits alone in the modest living room of his hut, chuckling to himself as he reads an ancient scroll. He is seated in front of an open fire, burning brightly with a green flame. The room looks inviting, with various paintings and sketches of himself; a brown, furry woman who appears to be his wife; and four children – two resembling Hext, and two resembling his wife.
Hext looks up and smiles to himself. He rolls the scroll and places it next to his chair before walking to the door. He opens the door and returns to his seat.
Illyria steps inside the hut and looks around, perturbed. Hext gives her a friendly wave.
HEXT:
Illyria, this is a pleasant surprise, my dear.
(beat)
I’m sorry you can’t meet the wife and kids; they’re having an outing with my brother. I’d be there myself, but we don’t really see eye to eye.
ILLYRIA:
What do you know about Oni?
Hext stands up and guides his hand toward a chair.
HEXT:
Come, sit down.
ILLYRIA:
I will stand.
(beat)
What do you know about Oni?
HEXT:
I’m doing spectacularly well, thank you for asking.
(beat)
And as for what I know about Oni, he’ll…
(beat)
Hello, Bob.
Illyria swivels around toward the open door as Bob pushes his way through.
BOB:
Illyria, get out of here.
Bob tries to brush past Illyria, but she reaches her arm out, blocking him.
ILLYRIA:
No, Bob. After what Hext did to you, you are not thinking straight.
BOB:
Coming from you, Illyria, that’s almost funny.
Bob pushes past Illyria and moves toward Hext. Illyria grabs Bob by the shoulders and hurls him into the wall, knocking down the pictures of his family.
HEXT:
My wall!
Illyria steps toward Hext and grabs him by the throat.
ILLYRIA:
Bob wants you dead,
demon. And if I didn’t require answers, I would allow that to happen.
(beat)
So answer my question, or Bob will kill you.
Illyria loosens her grip slightly, allowing Hext to speak.
HEXT:
I doubt that.
(beat)
In any event, Oni is due to rise in just three nights from now. So I really do appreciate you taking the time from your hectic schedule to pay me a visit.
ILLYRIA (under breath):
So, the Wanderer, my dreams… they’re all true.
HEXT:
I’m afraid so.
ILLYRIA:
Where will he rise?
Illyria turns to see Bob climbing to his feet.
ILLYRIA:
Tell me, or…
Hext rolls his eyes.
HEXT:
Hmm…Japanese theme, samurai Slayers, ninja vampires…
(beat)
It’s definitely not Timbuktu.
Illyria looks at Hext, perplexed.
HEXT:
It’s
Japan, Illyria.
(beat)
I cannot believe you guys didn’t think of that.
ILLYRIA:
Where in Japan?
HEXT:
I wish I could tell you, I really do.
(beat)
But you’ll just have to settle for my well wishes.
Illyria glares at Hext. He looks back at her in complete earnest. Illyria drops him to the ground and turns to leave.
ILLYRIA (to Bob):
Are you coming?
BOB:
Give me a minute.
ILLYRIA:
Bob…
BOB:
Illyria. Give. Me. A.
Minute.
Illyria nods her head and leaves Hext’s hut. Bob reaches down toward the ground and picks up a picture of Hext with his family.
BOB:
Nice family, Hext.
HEXT:
Thanks, Bob. That means a lot. You know, I gave you an opportunity to have one of your own. But you squandered it, and here you are.
BOB:
You gave me an opportunity to live a lie.
(beat)
But your family’s
real. I’m going to take it on faith that you’re not messing with us. Because, if it turns out you are, you will lose your perfect life.
Hext gulps with concern as Bob clenches his fist, crushing the picture of Hext’s family. Bob drops the picture and leaves Hext’s hut.
INT. DOMINION BAR
The Dominion Bar is dimly lit and customers are nowhere to be seen. Shell, Clem and Kalinka stand around quietly as the entrance swings open. Illyria enters, followed by Bob.
BOB:
Good, you’re all up.
KALINKA:
Thanks to Shell waking us up. This had better be good, Bob.
CLEM:
At least you can get a decent night’s beauty sleep, Kalinka. I’ve been sleeping on my desk.
BOB:
Illyria and I paid a little visit to Hext.
CLEM:
What, the guy who…
Shell glares at Clem sternly and shakes her head furiously. She gestures to him to be quiet. Clem nods.
BOB:
Hext confirmed that Oni will indeed rise in three nights.
KALINKA:
Thanks, Bob. Can I go back to bed now?
BOB:
No.
(beat)
Hext also mentioned that he will rise in Japan.
Clem shakes his head.
CLEM:
Um…did he happen to say
where? I mean, there are a
lot of temples in Japan.
BOB:
He says he doesn’t know.
SHELL:
After everything, can we trust him?
BOB:
I don’t know, Shell. But it
is all we have.
Shell nods her head.
ILLYRIA:
I say we scour Japan. We investigate every temple.
BOB:
I agree.
(beat)
The Dominion is closed for business until we have this sorted. All our resources must be spent stopping Oni.
SHELL:
And saving Jack and Beck.
BOB:
That’s not the priority right now, Shell.
Flabbergasted, Shell stares at Bob.
ILLYRIA:
Bob is right. It is two lives or billions.
BOB:
Okay, get some weapons and head out.
Illyria, Clem and Kalinka walk out behind the back. Bob turns to Shell.
BOB:
Shell, wait.
Shell turns to Bob.
SHELL:
Yeah?
BOB:
We will save them, Shell. But now we have to focus on the matter at hand.
SHELL:
This is the matter at hand, Bob. It’s all connected.
(beat)
The Tengu came, made us an offer, just to
show us that he took our friends
Bob lowers his head.
BOB:
I know.
Shell turns to leave and Bob opens his mouth, stopping her.
BOB:
And Shell, can you help me keep an eye on Illyria?
(beat)
She’s too close to Oni. I’m worried she’ll do something stupid.
SHELL:
Sure thing. But just so you know, she’s not the
only one having problems with this.
INT. DUNGEON
The dungeon is dark, with very little light entering. Miranda is holding a bo staff as she glares at Tok, who is constrained by chains. The Tengu stands behind Miranda, in his demonic form, and next to him stands KATSUO SAKAMOTO, dressed in formal business attire.
Miranda pokes her bo staff violently at Tok’s stomach.
MIRANDA:
Who do you work for?
Tok does not answer. Miranda responds by slamming the bo staff into Tok’s stomach again.
MIRANDA:
You’ve been here over a week, ninja. Do you wish to die?
Tok looks up at Miranda and smiles. The Tengu turns to Sakamoto.
TENGU:
Does the girl even speak English?
Sakamoto steps toward Tok and leans into her ear.
SAKAMOTO (subtitled from Japanese):
As you have no doubt noticed, my friends can be quite violent.
(beat)
We found your headset, and we know you’re working with somebody. So simply tell me who sent you, and I can ensure that your death will be painless.
Tok spits directly at Sakamoto’s face. He wipes the saliva away and turns to Miranda.
SAKAMOTO:
Have fun with her, Slayer.
(beat)
I’ll be upstairs. I have to make a call.
INT. DOMINION BAR
Bob paces back and forth across the dance floor of the dimly lit, virtually empty bar, agitatedly. Shell, Illyria, Clem and Kalinka watch him with concern.
BOB:
We’ve spent the last three days scouring Japanese temples and we have
nothing. Not even the slightest lead.
(beat)
And Oni is due to rise tonight.
Shell nods her head solemnly.
BOB:
Illyria, is there
anything at all that you can think of that may help us?
ILLYRIA:
No. I’ve been having dreams, but they feature Oni and Winifred Burkle.
SHELL:
Is there any link between them?
ILLYRIA:
No.
(beat)
Wait…
Shell looks at Illyria warmly as she is filled with hope, not just to stop Oni, but to help her friends.
SHELL:
What is it?
ILLYRIA:
Millions of years ago, I took Oni as my lover. My dreams also feature Wesley.
CLEM:
As in Fred’s boyfriend?
ILLYRIA:
Yes.
Bob grimaces at the thought of Illyria’s past love life.
BOB:
So Oni is playing you and your emotions.
(beat)
But does that give you any indication of where you can find him?
ILLYRIA:
The dreams – Wesley and I – were at Wolfram & Hart.
KALINKA:
That’s a bit of a stretch, isn’t it?
BOB:
Stretch or not, it’s the best we have. And the Tengu was in the New York branch.
SHELL:
But is Wolfram & Hart in Japan at all?
KALINKA:
They have three offices. Osaka, Tokyo and Sapporo.
(beat)
I visited them all when doing a vengeance tour of Japan. Lovely country, by the way.
BOB:
Okay, the full moon is out tonight, and we need to stop this. We have no idea
when Oni will rise, or from which Wolfram & Hart office. Shell, head to Osaka. Clem, Kalinka, you go to Sapporo. Illyria and I will head to Tokyo.
CLEM:
Um, Kalinka and I aren’t
exactly warriors, Bob.
BOB:
Kalinka, if you find Oni, can you use your magic to contact me telepathically?
KALINKA:
I think so…
BOB:
Don’t think so,
do so.
(beat)
Grab your weapons, everyone, and get going.
INT. SAPPORO, WOLFRAM & HART FOYER
Clem and Kalinka enter the foyer. They are each carrying a sword as they proceed carefully. Clem looks around his surroundings and sighs as he notices that there is nobody in sight.
CLEM:
It’s empty?
KALINKA:
I don’t like this one bit, Clem.
Clem and Kalinka continue walking. Clem points toward a statue of a frightened woman in the distance.
CLEM:
That’s kinda creepy.
The two walk toward the statue and Kalinka jumps in shock.
CLEM:
What is it?
KALINKA:
It’s not a statue. It’s
Beck.
Clem rushes toward Beck and stares at her, stunned.
CLEM:
Can you…help her?
Kalinka places her hands on Beck’s petrified face and closes her eyes. Seconds later, Kalinka opens her eyes. The pigmentation is gone, instead her eyes glow bright white.
Kalinka begins to scream in fright and collapses to the ground. Clem drops to his knees and places his hands over Kalinka. He shakes her gently.
CLEM (worried):
Kalinka?
(beat)
Kallie…?
INT. OSAKA, WOLFRAM & HART FOYER
Shell carries a battleaxe as she enters the foyer. She looks around as three VAMPIRES eye her off.
SHELL:
Don’t mind me, guys.
(beat)
It’s better that way. Trust me.
The vampires grin to each other as Shell keeps walking. Shell’s eyes and mouth open widely as she sees Jack, petrified, standing as the foyer’s centrepiece.
SHELL:
Oh my God,
Jack!
Shell rushes toward Jack and stares at her boyfriend.
SHELL (under breath):
What have they
done to you?
Shell turns around as the three vampires approach slowly.
SHELL:
What have you done to him?!
The vampires fail to respond. Shell slashes her battleaxe at vampire #1, decapitating him. As the vampire turns to dust, vampire #2 rushes toward her. Swiftly, Shell decapitates the vampire, dusting him.
Shell turns to vampire #3 and punches him in the face. The vampire reels back and Shell kicks him in the stomach, knocking him to the ground. She straddles him and punches his violently in the face.
SHELL:
Tell me what you’ve done to him!
The vampire simply grins.
VAMPIRE #3:
It’s a message from Oni.
Shell lifts her battleaxe and slams it through the vampire’s neck. He dissipates into dust underneath her. Shell scrambles to her feet and toward Jack. Tears begin to well up in her eyes and trickle down her cheeks.
SHELL (under breath):
Jack…
INT. TOKYO, WOLFRAM & HART CONFERENCE ROOM – NIGHT
Through the window, a full moon can be seen illuminating the night sky. Bob and Illyria walk across the empty conference room.
ILLYRIA:
You do not trust me.
BOB:
It’s not a matter of trust. You’re too close to Oni, and he is relying on that.
Bob and Illyria swivel around as they hear a door close behind them. The Tengu, Miranda and Sakamoto step toward Bob and Illyria. Miranda draws a katana and Sakamoto grips the Spear of Destiny.
SAKAMOTO:
I’m glad you could make it, Illyria.
INT. DUNGEON
A beaten and bruised Tok violently rattles the chains binding her to the wall. She fights with all the strength inside her, to no avail.
TOK (shouting; subtitled from Japanese):
You can let me out now! The joke’s over!
Tok sighs in the realisation that her attempts to escape are futile. She looks toward the ground and grins, as she sees something moving. In a flurry, two miniature black-suited creatures leap into the air, smashing tiny swords against her chains. Tok drops to the ground, free.
TOK (subtitled from Japanese):
Thank you, my ninja puppets.
The two creatures step into the light, and their appearance can be seen. Standing at about ten inches tall, the NINJA PUPPETS bow to Tok. A third ninja puppet enters, dragging Tok’s katana toward her and dropping it at her feet.
NINJA PUPPET #3 (subtitled from Japanese):
They’re upstairs in the conference room.
INT. TOKYO, WOLFRAM & HART CONFERENCE ROOM
Miranda leaps toward Bob, kicking him violently in the head. The attack sends Bob reeling back, and he responds by ejecting the spikes from below his wrists. Miranda slashes her katana toward Bob furiously, and the demon barely repels each attack.
The Tengu watches, shaking his head.
TENGU:
That is enough, Miranda Hendricks.
(beat)
We just need to incapacitate him for the time being.
Miranda ceases her attack and bows toward the Tengu.
MIRANDA:
Of course, my Daimyo.
The Tengu raises his fist, telekinetically lifting Bob into the air. The Tengu then opens his hand, forcing Bob’s limbs to stretch apart. With all his strength, Bob struggles to resist the Tengu’s pull with all his strength, to no avail. Blood begins to trickle from Bob’s ears from the stress, but he keeps fighting.
Sakamoto aims the Spear of Destiny at Illyria. He breathes deeply and rushes toward her. In a swift movement, Illyria snatches the spear from Sakamoto’s hand and plunges it directly into his chest. The Spear of Destiny begins to glow brightly and Sakamoto grins as blood pours from the wound.
Sakamoto’s body drops to the ground. Illyria watches in horror as his body begins to glow with a red tinge. Slowly, the glow fades away and Sakamoto’s skin becomes rough with a dark purple colour. Finally, the colour in his eyes fades away as his eyeballs become a blood-red colour.
Bob stares at Sakamoto, horrified.
BOB (exhausted):
Illyria…
(beat)
What have you…done…?
TENGU:
That is
enough.
The Tengu clenches his fist, crushing Bob and knocking him unconscious. With a violent gesture, the Tengu throws Bob into the air, sending him crashing through the wall.
Slowly, Sakamoto’s body rises. Illyria holds the Spear of Destiny firmly as she watches.
ILLYRIA:
It’s…
Sakamoto is gone. In his place stands ONI.
ONI:
It is I, my love.
Oni.
INT. SAPPORO, WOLFRAM & HART FOYER
Clem shakes, panicked, as he cradles Kalinka in his arms gently.
CLEM:
Come on, Kallie, you can get through this…
(beat)
Please…Look, I know we’ve had our problems, but…but, I love you. I really do.
Unbeknownst to Clem, a translucent image of the Wanderer stands in the background, watching solemnly.
INT. OSAKA, WOLFRAM & HART FOYER
Tears stream down Shell’s cheeks as she stares at the petrified Jack.
SHELL:
Jack…Please make it through this.
(beat)
We need you. I need you.
(beat)
I love you…
Behind Shell, the Wanderer fades into the background in a translucent form. He shakes his head sadly. Slowly, the Wanderer fades away into the ether.
INT. TOKYO, WOLFRAM & HART CONFERENCE ROOM
Illyria grips the Spear of Destiny, standing her ground firmly as Oni steps toward her. She glares at him with great resolve.
ILLYRIA:
I am
not your love. That was millennia ago.
Oni sniffs into the air. His face hardens as he becomes angry.
ONI:
You reek of humanity, Illyria.
ILLYRIA:
Humanity is the advantage I have over you.
With the back of his hand, Oni slaps Illyria across the face, hurling her backward through the air. Illyria crashes onto the floor, dropping the Spear of Destiny. Surprised, Oni looks down at her.
ONI:
And you’re somewhat…weakened?
(beat)
What has this era done to you?
Blood runs from Illyria’s face as she stares up at Oni.
ILLYRIA:
It has given me
perspective.
Oni shakes his head and kicks Illyria violently. He reaches to the ground and lifts the Spear of Destiny. He holds it above his head, and slams it down at Illyria and through her chest.
ONI:
Then keep your humanity.
The door to the conference room crashes open and Tok rushes inside.
TOK:
No!
Miranda jumps toward Tok and grabs her firmly.
MIRANDA:
You’ll have to tell me how you escaped someday, Houdini.
Tok struggles to break free of Miranda’s grip to no avail. Gradually, a translucent image of the Wanderer appears behind the two girls, unnoticed by everybody in the room.
Illyria lies on the ground, unconscious. Slowly, her blue skin fades away and her hair becomes a brunette colour. Illyria is gone. In her place lies WINIFRED BURKLE.
Oni grabs Fred by the neck and grips her firmly.
ONI:
It’s not even
worth crushing the life from you.
Oni casually throws Fred toward the window. Fred’s body crashes through the window and plummets toward the ground below.
With a great surge of strength, Tok breaks free of Miranda’s grip and scrambles toward the window after Fred. By the time Tok reaches the window, Fred has fallen from view.
WANDERER (under breath):
It’s too late. Oni has risen.
INT. TOKYO, TOK’S HOME
Tok’s home is very inviting. The walls are painted in a white colour, paintings are placed tidily on the wall, and a mantelpiece holds various family photos from over the years. A middle-aged Japanese woman, TOK’S MOTHER, places the telephone down.
TOK’S MOTHER (calling; subtitled from Japanese):
Tok, you have a phone call!
Tok, dressed in comfortable casual clothing and still nursing her bruises, runs toward the phone and picks it up.
VOICE (O.C.):
I hadn’t heard from you in weeks. I feared you were dead.
TOK:
That fear was misplaced.
(beat)
However, I failed you. Oni has risen.
INT. SCOTLAND, SLAYER HEADQUARTERS
RUPERT GILES sits alone in a surveillance room wearing a headset. Various monitors featuring visuals of various Slayers fighting demons can be seen in the background.
GILES:
I trust you did everything you could, Tok.
(beat)
I have an agent on her way to Tokyo as we speak. She will rendezvous with you within the next 24 hours.
FADE OUT.
END OF ACT THREE.
CLOSING CREDITS ROLL.
