Prologue: for the better half of the last century the war has been stopped, from the alliance of the races that plagued this earth we became unaware of the danger that still lurks between our worlds. The likens and the vampire, two primeval forces waged war on them selves 2000 years ago and ever since the battle raged human have taken a more defensive stance to them, thinking we would crumble to their power the humans worked together to protect themselves. Now we are forced in barrier cities, safe houses, scattered all over the world, the major cities in all countries became the hotspot for human activities. But now the communication grows thin, the cities of the north begin to fall and we worry for our protection, in case of an attack we must always be alert. But the full moon approaches, and the peace talks have long gone untouched and no word from the likens could mean trouble, we are unaware of the numbers they have or seek, it was said that the vampires reduced their numbers but no such war has taken place in many years. My name is Amelia, I’ am a protector of the people, special OPPS force, indented to keep our race safe, I watch the north tower of new York… if you can call it that, new, New York occupies only a 3rd of what once stood, if a threat approaches the bell must be sound and should you ever hear it, you must gather what people you can and forward to either the bunkers underground where you will stay until help arrives from elsewhere or they gather in transports and leave the city, chances are people will go there, but because of the lack of pilots still in the air force we may not be able to accommodate for all of them. The committee of elders are high priests of Amen, the god of peace, the last book of Amen was destroyed in the initial attack and only fragments remain today but they give hope to the people, they state that no matter how grim our story unfolds we shall be saved by ‘him’ unfortunately this has not been very common in some places, some have neglected their religion and push away from it… the theory of this Amen giving strength to all seems ridiculous but I share a part of my heart with the belief. There has been talk of small settlements far away from cities, where disbelievers have gone to make it on their own, no one has been and came back to tell the tale but evidence of moving tribes have been found, to neat for likens and to rugged for vampires. The vampire syndicate are very proud, there have been rumors of them actually living in the cities, the peace talks stated that they were never to be interrupted while humans and likens still existed, they loved both but the fascination of blood has given them a slight fondness to humans, as apart of the agreement they are to be given blood on a regular basis, all citizens are required to give blood every week on the Sunday… or if it is truly Sunday some of us have taken on our own time system but it much like a Sunday, I can never truly grasp what a Sunday would feel like but to it feels like it. The confinements of the planet that we live in has pushed some to think outside the box… there was some suggestions of a lunar base, one that was free of enemies and a place that we could fall back on, a second front. These ideas were thrown away… it was about 10 years ago the council ordered the plans to be destroyed if the vampires learned of the humans colonizing a different place, a place they couldn’t get to then it might provoke them to enslave our already enslaved population. I can feel it with in me… the end days are coming and the calm serenity of our lives that my generation and those below me have taken in our lives, will come to an end… the disappearance of our top scientists is a concern, for they were the ones that built the barrier that was erected 2245… 46 years ago and thus made the vampires evaluate their hold on us and produced the peace talks… I live for my job… occasionally I get to leave the compounds and hunt for the wolves, I live the thrill and I’ am yet to show the world what I can truly do, let’s see how I go…
Chapter 1
‘Pregnant!? But how? Its not… no it is…’
…
And it was true, there was that time a few weeks ago, she had met a man, he was very nice to her, he kissed her on the lips, the neck and her arm all in the name seduction. She liked his lips, they were soft, and they penetrated her nerves and caused an explosion of emotions within her. However not meeting this man before she felt it was right, to engage in a physical relationship. The atmosphere was forming; the candles set the mood, a warm sexual environment complete with slow burn music in the background. He was very patient with her, he glanced in her eyes on the bed while they undressed themselves, he removed her top, and she placed her hands in the air as he ran his fingers through collecting the sweater as he went along. She rolled on top him; undoing his belt of his pants, sliding it off his waist, throwing it on the floor she then unzipped his pants and pulled them off.
The floor gathered in objects, cloths, jewelry, wallets all being thrown. This lasted all night, the fresh new candles faded in time melted away leaving smoke where fire once was the two were lying on the bed, half covered by the quilt they looked at each other, glanced once again in each others eyes, he ran his fingers in her long red hair as he began to speak ‘are you satisfied?’ he asked eagerly.
She smiled at him returning his actions by feeling his day old, shaven beard ‘what do you think?’
They both shared a smile at each other and then the clock by the bed rolled over to 6:00. Suddenly as if on queue the window to the right of them opened up, a roller shutter reeled open revealing the sun beaming in on them, casting a shadow over his physique she covers her eyes, not ready for the blinding effect it would have on her.
Outside a ship flew by them it was large and it rattled the apartment, the drinks at the bar in the other room shook with the vibrations as it passed.
This came as a shock to her she jumped up clutching the vibrations, quickly bent over to the side and picked up her watch, looked down at it as it gave her the time of 8:30
‘oh god I’m late for briefing!’ she stressed, getting up grabbing her pants collecting them and covering her body with them, he sighed, didn’t give much thought to her predicament and he said as calmly as he could ‘you set your rotations later than mine…’
She glared at him while still picking up everything. Once picked up she rushed over to the bathroom door, went in and closed the door, he got up used his arm for balance on the bed ‘seen my pants?’
The door opened and she throws them out to him hitting him in the face and causing him to fall over on the bed in a small private laughter ‘I don’t see why you’re stressing…’
From the bathroom where she was dressing herself in a hurry she yelled out ‘I’ve missed the first transport into down town… if I’m lucky I can catch the second’
He slowly got up collecting his things, not worrying about his complete nudity he continued ‘what’s this briefing thing about?’
again the words came from the bathroom but in between they were broken up, as he could only guess she was pulling up her jeans ‘I already told you David, it’s the progress report on the north colonies, the general wants us all to hear… my guess is it’s not good’
He sighed yet again but this time it was to what was just said, he knew very well that the possibility of an attack after just under a hundred years was less than likely
‘An attack on us? Not very likely’
She didn’t take this too kindly; it was a very serious situation they were all in, and she took her job very intensively ‘it’s not! The threat of war is very likely’
the response from David was common, because no such conflict had been caused it led the humans into a false sense of security, mothers raised their children in shadow to the dangers.
Finally she emerged from the bathroom, fully dressed; he stopped to look at her ‘what no uniform?’
Again a glare was sent her way as she rushed to grab her earrings from the floor and putting them in her ears ‘I’ve got a spare uniform at HQ… I’ll get changed there’
He smiles and walks over to her, hugging her, making contact with his body ‘it’s a shame I like a woman in uniform’ he goes to kiss her put she pulls away and grabs her bag on the bedside table near the clock ‘I’ll call you tonight’ walking up to him she kisses him on the cheek and forwards out leaving him to fall on the bed.
…
‘And this was before the confirmation on the destruction of Moscow?’ came from the man sitting on the chair facing her, he had a desk between them, on his desk a computer imbedded in it was turned on and he was typing into it as he spoke and as she did also.
Doctors were not just trained medicine practitioners they were rounded mental and physical healers, short supply of both so the merger of the two skills came into practice. Michael was his name, he had a history with her, grew up and the sort, only a few more years older and she always turned to him for guidance, the fact that he was a doctor only made it more convenient for her. All medical investigations and check-ups and even sessions would have to be documented and sent to the council for record, all new born babies had to be registered before birth had happened, but because of her knowing Michael he only jotted down what he would use and had no intentions to give this information to others.
‘Amelia, you must understand there is a chance this baby will never see the light of day, there are some complications in the baby’s growth’ he explained. She did not look happy, almost shocked at the news ‘what kind of complications?’
he stopped typing looked at her ‘your body may reject the baby as time goes by, you medical record shows that your mother had this problem as well?’
she nodes to him ‘then I think it is a very good chance that you shall have this problem as well… there are several traits that are concerning me in your likeness to your mother’
She took a deep breath ‘so you’re saying I could kill my child?’
Quickly to react ‘not at all Amelia, it is not your fault…’ he looks at the computer ‘by my calculations you have been pregnant for an official 4 weeks, I take it you have noticed these signs?’ again she nodes
he gets up walks over to her ‘I’m telling you as not only as your doctor but as your friend… take it easy, no combat, after a while you shall fill out and you won’t be able to hide it and the military will be forced to place you on maternity leave’
he gets back up and walks to his desk and begins to type again ‘I’m putting this down in the records to you having your monthly physical in advance so you won’t have to deal with this now but I suggest you give it some serious thought while your at it’
he clicks on the icon send and the message is away, a light on the wall lights up red, symbolizing that it had been sent to the council of records.
Amelia gets up from the seat, still uneasy of the situation and heads for the door placing her bag on her shoulder Michael calls out to her ‘Amelia one more thing… have you told the father?’ she pauses, turns half way to give him attention and speaks ‘there is no father’ Michael frowns and she walks out, he continues typing when a blinking sign comes up on the computer reading ‘incoming call… reception’ he presses it and a voice is herd ‘Mr. valor sir, a Mr., Zane would like to speak to you…’
He looks up and answers ‘I’ve been waiting for his call… put him through Wendy and cancel my 4:00
…
The only bad thing about the transport out of down town to Amelia was the long journey, it wasn’t very comfortable, cramming 20 to 30 people in the small compartment was not very pleasant, particularly since she wanted to be alone in this time of misfortune. The thoughts dwelled in her head, as she felt her stomach where the baby would grow, she felt very sad, as most would if they were to find this out, on the opposite to her a man, small lanky, unshaven beard and dressed in unclean clothes, he smiled at her in hopes of some attraction back, she looked his way and smiled then turned it into a frown towards him and he soon got the message.
Above them the speaker sound, it was the pilot ‘next stop river gardens apartments’
Amelia went to get up, took her bag by the arm and forwarded to the hatch, the ship stumbled and landed, they all felt it and shook them up a bit, the hatch open and she climbed out, walking a few paces away she turns around to see it moving off and just as the hatch closes the man gives her a wink.
Amelia felt sick after that, felt dirty. She turned and walked through the entrance swiping her card in front of the door scanner to let her in, walking along the corridor she made it to the elevator and she pressed down.
The transport pad landed on level 6 and she lived on level 5, it seemed easier to place the transports at the top instead of at the bottom, but it was pricier than the regular, wheeled transport on the bottom.
In the elevator she pressed the level 5 and it was soon underway, with a ding it opened to her level, not mush though it was just like the others, the same kind of wall paper and holograms of advertisements in some places… one could only think how annoying they must get, and the bad thing is they follow you to where your going.
On walking down to her apartment she choose to ignore the yelling people in the holograms in the walls following her, yelling out such things like ‘do you feel lonely?... need a friend’ or ‘come in today and you will get a huge bargain… everything must go!’
She made it to her door and placed the card in the scanner and it opened up but before going in she stops turns and looks at the door opposite her own, it held the number 22b. She paused at looking at it, she wanted to go in but she took a deep breath and closed her door.
Inside she was confronted by a draft, her window was open, she left it there hoping it would cool the place down but she didn’t think she would be gone for so long, but it was now to cold, walking over she pressed the button on the wall next to the open window, it slowly sealed shut, she walked over in front of the fire place and double clapped in front of it, the wood burst into flame, she walked into the kitchen, grabs herself a wine glass as she went and took out a bottle of wine in the cooler and poured herself a glass, taking it back to the lounge she sat, taking a sip, placing it on the table and watched the flames intense in the fire while fighting off the urge to fall asleep.
