I mean going into the library/bookstore/online and grabbing a book you have never heard about, never heard the author and possibly not read to much of the specific genre of the book, taking a risk on it. Ever done it?
I recently was in the library and decided to take a chance on a book that I had never heard of. I read about 20 pages and shut it, it was terrible.

I'm very fussy with the books I read. I tend not to read books if they fall in a genre that I'm not a fan off. I'm not fussed about authors. It's the genre that I'm fussy about.

I will take a chance on most things, within reason. There are books I have enjoyed that would fall out of my preferred genre, if someone recommends something as being good I'll give it a chance. And I'll read at least a couple of chapters before forming an opinion, some books start slowly. Others that aren't that well written, like Lord of the Rings, end up with a story that is good enough to overlook the writing style so 20 pages for me wouldn't be enough to get a feel for a book. The only genre I won't look at are romance books, I have no interest in reading that sort of story no matter how well written it may be.

Took a chance on The Hunger Games before it became popular, and now I LOVE that series.

I randomly pick up books all the time, but I read the blurb before deciding whether or not to give it a chance Genre doesn't matter that much to me and neither does the author. But if I've taken a chance on an author once and I've hated the book I don't read anything else by them.

The type of fonts used in the book play a part in deciding whether I should read it or not.

I have bought most of my books purely from reading the blurb. I'd say that process has only failed me two or three times. And I've been pleasantly surprised too. I bought a couple of Matthew Reilly books just because they were on sale and I was looking for something new to read. I wasn't really into that genre at the time but I enjoyed them so much that I had them both read within a couple of days and had to go buy the rest. Libraries are good because it doesn't cost anything and you can just take it back if you don't like it. One of my fails was buying the first of the Mortal Instruments series - hated it big time, so I bought the other two and gave the set to my niece for Christmas.

Might give Game of Thrones a chance. Found out one of my friends has read it so might borrow the book from her. I refuse to buy it as it's too expensive and I'm afraid I won't like it.
