Award winners:
Fargo
Evita
The People vs. Larry Flynt
Shine
The Crucible
The English Patient won best film at the Oscars.
My (somewhat random) selections:
Dunston Checks In - I think I watched this tape about a billion times when I visited my grandparents in Auckland. I thought it was hilarious. It's really not.
Happy Gilmore - actually think this Sandler flick isn't completely terrible, although I don't think I've seen it in 15 years.
James and the Giant Peach - Actually very cool, probably worth a re-watch
Mrs. Winterbourne - I thought this movie was so great. Brendan Fraser was a total cutie.
The Craft - I watched this recently. I remember my brother's girlfriend (age 18) LOVED it.
Flipper - DEFINITELY GOING TO REWATCH.
Harriet the Spy - For about 2 days I decided I'd be like Harriet, and write notes about everyone. Then I realised that's super obnoxious. Harriet had a really cool tree in her backyard, or something. Sport ended up being Ephram in Everwood.
Matilda - Did not realise there were two Roald Dahl movies this year! What a great year to be 8.
Jack - I HATE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH. Most depressing movie experience ever. 10/10 would never watch again.
Fly Away Home - I actually downloaded this the other day. I'm half-way through. I love Anna Pacquin's original accent.
The First Wives Club - This movie is obviously excellent. Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, Bette Midler, Maggie Smith...what's not to love? DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO SAY.
That Thing You Do! - I watched this recently and absolutely loved it - definitely reccomend.
Romeo + Juliet - A Baz classic. Leo is A++++
Space Jam - Hahah.
101 Dalmatians - I don't think I've ever re-watched this. Apparently John Hughes wrote the screenplay! For some reason I had remembered Anjelica Huston as Cruella deVille, which would have been AMAZING.
Scream - My favourite horror movie of all time.
One Fine Day - I really like this movie. It has a lovely soundtrack too. Similar in feel to those classic Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks films (aka my favs)
Bottle Rocket - Wes Anderson's first film - watch to see just how Wes Anderson-y he is now.
- The Australian federal election, 1996 is held; Labor's Paul Keating loses to Liberal leader John Howard.
- The British government announces that Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (aka Mad Cow) has been likely transmitted to people
- Port Arthur massacre: Martin Bryant kills 35 people at the Port Arthur, Tasmania tourist site, Australia.
- The Australian government introduces a nationwide ban on the private possession of both automatic and semi-automatic rifles, in response to the Port Arthur massacre.
- The Nintendo 64 video game system is released in Japan.
- Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be successfully cloned from an adult cell, is born at the Roslin Institute in Midlothian, Scotland.
- The 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, United States, begin.
- Brookfield Zoo, Chicago. After a 3-year-old boy falls into the 20-foot (6.1 m) deep gorilla enclosure, Binti Jua, a female lowland gorilla sits with the injured boy until his rescue.
- News Corporation launches the Fox News Channel as a 24-hour news channel to compete against CNN
- The O. J. Simpson civil trial begins in Santa Monica, California.
- United States presidential election, 1996: Incumbent Democratic President Bill Clinton defeats his Republican challenger, Bob Dole.
