My picks and predictions for the big ones on Sunday:
ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Timothée Chalamet, Call Me by Your Name
Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread
Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out
Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
Denzel Washington, Roman J. Israel, Esq.
Will win: Gary Oldman. He is awesome, has always been awesome, and he is brilliant in this.
Who I want to win: Sirius of course
ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
Frances McDormand, Three Billboards
outside Ebbing, Missouri
Margot Robbie, I, Tonya
Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
Meryl Streep, The Post
Will win: Frances has it in the bag.
Who I want to win: I think Sally and Margot are both exceptional in very difficult, very different roles. I am not unhappy about Frances though, she is fabulous in Three Billboards...
ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project
Woody Harrelson, Three Billboards
outside Ebbing, Missouri
Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water
Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World
Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri
Will win: Seems like its Rockwell's to lose. His character has issues, but his performance doesn't.
Who I want to win: I would like Dafoe to get it. Gorgeous work in The Florida Project.
ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Mary J. Blige, Mudbound
Allison Janney, I, Tonya
Lesley Manville, Phantom Thread
Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water
Will win: Allison Janney has pretty much won them all. She is pure evil in I, Tonya. Great performance. Its between her and Metcalf.
Who I want to win: My CJ of course. Janney plays my favourite female character of all time and I
her.
DIRECTING
Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk
Jordan Peele, Get Out
Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird
Paul Thomas Anderson, Phantom Thread
Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water
Will win: I think they will go with GDT. Not undeserved.
Who I want to win: I actually think what Nolan did with Dunkirk was flat out amazing.
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
The Big Sick
Get Out
Lady Bird
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri
Will win: Will be Peele. It original, its timely, its cool.
Who I want to win: Happy with Peele, though Kumail and Emily winning would be great. The Big Sick was damn good.
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Call Me by Your Name
The Disaster Artist
Logan
Molly's Game
Mudbound
Will win: James Ivory for CMBYN. Amazing career. Should have an Oscar (and he is OLD). This is a weird year for Adapted Screenplays IMO.
Who I want to win: My writing fave Sorkin already has one so happy for Ivory to take it.
BEST PICTURE
Call Me by Your Name
Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
Get Out
Lady Bird
Phantom Thread
The Post
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri
Will win: For the first time in awhile, i'm just not sure. I think Three Billboards has the momentum but there is a bit of a backlash going on. The Shape of Water has the most nominations, but that didn't work help La La Land! Get Out could sneak in..... People are talking about Lady Bird being the bolter (not for me, didn't love it). In a pinch i'll say Three Billboards, but i wouldn't put money on it.
Who I want to win: I have seen all but Phantom Thread (I just have no desire to watch it and can't bring myself to) and I enjoyed Dunkirk and The Shape of Water the most.
