A much hated character I used to hate Riley, but on later viewings I mostly feel sorry for him and don't mind him. I'm lazy atm so will add my opinion later, what does everyone like or hate about Riley?

I detested him at first but on repeated viewings my opinion of him has changed. I now have much Riley sympathy. His relationship with Buffy was obviously his main story arc and it was one that was destined to fail in both the Buffyverse and in the eyes of the viewers. As a couple they really lacked chemistry and it always seemed forced. It was fairly obvious that Buffy didn't feel for Riley what he felt for her. Its quite sad to watch because of that fact.

I'm kind of the opposite. I loved Riley at first. I thought he was fresh, yeah kind of boring, but it's what Buffy needed. But now, when I look at those eps, I think wow he is dull. And I did not like when he let those vamps drink from him. It didn't make him "darker" it just made him disgusting, imo.

I didn't take to Riley at all at first but that was mostly because I was still getting over Angel leaving, but after I've rewatched season 4 many times I've grown to love him. I like the man that he was, I like his values, his loyalty and his personality that a lot of people refer to as boring. I like that he's so in love with Buffy, its cute and a little sad.
I don't like the fact that he went to the vamp whores and it was unfair to give Buffy an unltimatum. But I do think that if Buffy had loved Riley half as much as he loved her he could have been her Mr Right.

Well if you hate Parker you could atleast give Riley points for hitting him when he was talking about Buffy

I didnt like Riley at first. I was happy when Angel came back to Sunnydale and kicked his ass. But now i love Riley, he is far from boring. He actually has some really great lines in the show.
"Sorry i forgot my manners in all the concussion" "I mean im plotting your death, but in a good way"
I was sad to see him go but Buffy didnt need a good guy like him.

why do you say that? wouldn't it have been good to see Buffy in a trouble free relationship all happy and care free

Yeah but we saw what she did. She rejected it and it spiralled out of control. She can never be in a relationship that is care free that's why she didnt need Riley. It would have been nice if she did need him but she didnt.

I don't think she rejected it because it was carefree I don't think she rejected it at all, but she didn't love Riley as much as she had thought. She got caught up in her problems with Glory and her mother, and Riley simply wasnt someone she turned to for comfort, she neglected him but didnt knowingly reject him. She could have been with someone normal who would make her happy, but that someone wasnt Riley - she was never in love with him. I think Xander made her realise in the end that she COULD love him that much. Rileys biggest mistake to me was the ultimatum. Expecting her to forgive him so soon and not have time to think about it was really pig headed and wrong. THe vamp whores were gross, but the ultimatum was what cost him Buffy. We saw she was willing to forgive him after her talk with Xander - he should have stuck around for that since he claimed to love her so much. Also - wow he got married quick! Sam claims it took him ages to get over her - he was married 12 months after he left Sunnydale! So it couldnt have taken him that long

I was going to start a topic on the whole riley buffy relationship but I may as well add to this.
Anyway, I was watching Season five the other night and Riley said to buffy "its about me looking after you", I think deep down Rileys problem was buffy was ...to powerfull, she didnt need a man to fall back on, shes the slayer, there always alone in the end, He wanted something she could never give, Fair enough She relied on angel alot, but she was a kid. He was her First Love.
I agree with what Beck said she Unknowingly rejected him and pushed him away, It took Xander to make her realise that.
The ultimatum was ridiculous, He was so desperate to have someone crave him he went and got bit by vampires, she could never get over it that quickly, he said at first he wanted to get back at her for getting bit by dracula.

My dislike of Riley was because of fanficion, there's always Riley bashing. And I was reading fanfic before watching the show, after I finished watching BtVS I realized that Riley wasn't that bad, he was sweet, caring with less faults IMO than the core four.

Its a mans natural instinct to want to protect your girlfriend/wife and its not always because of macho reasons. Especially being brought up in an environment where you are trained to protect and then all of a sudden you have the sense of uselessness and someone telling you that you cant go out patrolling because you are "weak and kittenish" at the moment. Yipes.

I admit I didn't like Riley at first because I considered him the anti-Angel and I love Angel but by Season 5 he grew on me. Like I've said before I don't believe there were any bad guys in the Buffy and Riley relationship and personally believe if circumstances were different, they could have had a chance.

Yeah theres a lot of Riley bashers, Although I find it more of a problem with shippers, Bangel and Spuffy shippers, I mean Die hard ones that are dead set that buffy only every loved Spike or Angel, and its the same vice versa, of course not all shippers are crazy like that Its a mans natural instinct to want to protect your girlfriend/wife and its not always because of macho reasons. Especially being brought up in an environment where you are trained to protect and then all of a sudden you have the sense of uselessness and someone telling you that you cant go out patrolling because you are "weak and kittenish" at the moment. Yipes. Dont forget Buffy's Job is protecting people to, you dont think woman want to protect there husbands/boyfriends? , it was wrong for buffy who has protected people all her life to want to protect her injured boyfriend, but its okay for Riley to want to protect his fully abled, powerful slayer girlfriend? sounds rather Contradictive. I admit I didn't like Riley at first because I considered him the anti-Angel and I love Angel but by Season 5 he grew on me. Like I've said before I don't believe there were any bad guys in the Buffy and Riley relationship and personally believe if circumstances were different, they could have had a chance. I thought Riley and Buffy couldve made it work, He wasnt my favourite character but I could never really decide weather i disliked him or not, He loved Buffy with all of her heart, its a real shame Buffy never realised (or was made to realise) that she had closed up on him, I always rewatch the episode where riley flies out, hoping he will look out of the helicopter and see her one time!

I admit, I hated Riley on first viewing. But after rewatching season 4 and 5, I find that Riley is not that bad of a guy. He has his faults but overall, I think he's just misunderstood.
I won't say that he's my favourite character out of all but I wouldn't go as far to say that he was one dimensional or a cardboard. I hate that many people are calling him that when in fact, he's the total opposite.
Another thing I hate is how people keep saying that getting a vampire to suck off him just to feel wanted is such a hideous crime when Buffy does the same with Spike in season 6. I thought that was worse than what Riley did, in my opinion.
Honestly, I just feel that Riley is the most misunderstood character.

I've never hated Riley. The guy's a bit bland compared to Angel, but when it's all said and done, he's a nice guy. He went through his issues, etc (like the vampire bit), but I just thought that it had more power to it because he was such a "nice" guy.

Because he was such a nice guy and he was normal. He wasn't a witch or a demon or someone who had a mysterious backstory. He was just a normal guy and for a abnormal show like Buffy, it was weird and viewers were not use to it and couldn't quite accept it. He was abnormal because he was normal.

Yeah, I agree that's much of it. I also think that a lot of it is that he's not Angel. I think coming from the whole Buffy/Angel arc, many people weren't willing to accept someone else, no matter who he is...

I think I began disliking Riley when the whole Vampire thing happend, I think it was another example of Someone reacting very badly, He couldve handled it better, Buffy wasnt treating him very well at all, but instead of trying to make her realise (although wouldve taken alot of tries ) he messed up. Although I think my opinion (like you both said) is because of the angel/buffy arc, but for the opposite reason, Angel was a brooding pain in the butt, feeling sorry for himself quite a bit, and then riley strted feeling sorry for himself, Completely different situations, but I still link them . Thats also why i like Spuffy, Spikes feeling sorry for himself, he always told buffy what he was thinking. More exciting.
