Split from: Favourite+and+Most+Hated+CharactersI agree about Tara's death. I love Willow, and that scene proved that Alyson Hannigan's a brilliant actress, but it was all about Wllow's reaction... Made me think of the deaths in the show, the main ones and the ones that couldve happend. Jesse,Jenny,Joyce, Tara, Anya, Dawn (What if), Angel (didnt technically die) How did they effect you? Was it the actual death or the effects it had on the other characters that effected you? Did any deaths not effect you at all?, What if the people who had died, had never died?. What would btvs be like if Dawn had jumped into the Portal and not buffy, A lot of questions, maybe I shouldve seperated into different posts, I'll let Beck decide whats best EDIT: added in Jenny, completely forgot 'bout her, thanks Glenn!

Deaths that affected me hmmm. I think the first one was Jenny's at the hands of Angelus. I was quite young and was really scared when Angelus was chasing her through the school. And then when he caught her i was sure Buffy would save her because thats what is supposed to happen. But no....snap....it was horrible. Then one of the most brilliant scenes ever. Angelus watching Buffy and Willow's reaction through a window, dear me that was just....i dont know how to describe it. And then seeing our Giles completely break down and Buffy breaking down because of the affect this had on him. The way Angelus set up the scenario for Giles to find her with the music and the roses. That is the death that had the biggest affect on me and what made the "greatest" viewing.

Jenny's death really got to me, and made me think "wow". It was harsh, I felt for Giles, and it really drove home just how scary Angelus is. I didn't realy feel for Jesse's, probably because it was a first episode thing. That said, I think Joss missed a possibility to explore the ramifications of it (that said, it might have been a bit too "heavy" for such a young series at the time). Joyce's death was horrible - I was left shocked while watching The Body, rather than sad (though that came later). Anya's death wasn't that terrible to me, though I did feel for Xander. I think it's more that she was a casualty of war than anything else. Angel was a shocker. I remember showing a friend season 2, since he'd be watching Angel. He was shocked, and said that there's no coming back from it, at which point I had to remind him "Dude, you watch Angel... Ofcourse he comes back" And as for Dawn... We could live in hope, right? Actully, if she died in season 5, I would have felt for it from Buffy's perspective at least.

Jennys death shocked and upset me, because I really liked her - but more so the reaction, heartbreaking. Seen it a thousand times and it still makes me cry. Jesse I didn't care about :dunno: Joyce's was sad because of The Body and the reactions but it didn't upset me too much. Tara's... well tbh I wasn't fussed at all. Willow's initial upsetness and Dawn finding her and sitting in the corner was sad but then Willow went all evil and well... kinda forgot about the initial sadness Angel's made me cry of course, Becoming was fabulously done. And I;m not a Bangel fan at all - that scene still gets me. Anya's was more a shock than anything and we weren't given a change to grieve her. Buffy's second death (the one that lasted more than 5 onscreen minutes ) also made me cry, more so the reactions - Spike's in particular. What do you mean Dawn's what if? ALl the characters came reasonably close to dying?

First of all, all of the deaths make me cry again and again. The writers always amaze me with how powerful they can make death scenes. Jenny's death was horrible for me. I really liked her. And the fact stands, I always think no one can die, and that she'll get away. It's all for suspense. Then she died. I was like NOOOOOO. And plus the reactions of Buffy and Willow were so sad. But then Giles and La Boheme in the background! Oh my gosh, when the music hits its peak as he drops the bottle-- talking about it is going to make me cry. Jesse's death was kinda a aww for Xander, but mostly I was like sooo who is that guy?? Joyce's death left me scared more than anything. I mean, death is sad and shocking and reactions make the death even sadder, but Joyce's was natural. Like, obviously no one in real life is going to be killed by a vampire. I think we can all agree on that. But a tumor... it's so real. Joyce's death really freaked me out, and that was my major reaction. Plus the music-less episode was very eerie. Angel's death was absolutely heartbreaking. I can't even start to convey my reaction to that. Okay, yes I can. I was bawling like Timon and Pumbaa when they realize Simba found Nala again. Random connection, but hopefully you know what I mean. "Full of Grace" is such an awesome song to put along with Buffy leaving, too. When Buffy died at the end of "The Gift" I was so sad. And all her friends were so sad it made me sadder. But I didn't cry until it showed Spike's reaction. I soo know what you mean, Beck. Spike's reaction was just so heartbreaking. I would have been very sad if Dawn had died! I'm like the 1 out of 700 people that actually liked Dawn, and I would have been very sad if she had died, especially since Buffy would have taken it so hard.

Jesse I didn't care about Had Jesse been around for longer, and had been developed through more episodes, I think that his death would have meant more. The thing that seems unnatural about it to me is that he was never referenced afterwards (granted, it makes more sense from a writing perspective, but...)

Besides, Jesse, the only death that didn't affect me that much was Tara's. I never liked her so I couldn't care less that she died. I didn't count Jesse because we hardly know him so it's hard to get affected by his death. The one that got me the most is Angel's. I'm a big Bangel shipper so that whole scene where he gets his soul back and then having to see Buffy stab him was heartbreaking. I cried! Not all the deaths had the same make-you-cry effect. Deaths like Angel did but the rest, it was the reactions from the other characters that effected me. Not necessary by making me cry but by feeling the sadness that the characters did. The deaths that did that was Jenny's and Joyce's. The reactions from the Scoobies affected me more than the actually death. Willow's initial upsetness and Dawn finding her and sitting in the corner was sad but then Willow went all evil and well... kinda forgot about the initial sadness I have to agree with you on this one. There wasn't much of a reaction to Tara's death. It immediately became Willow's revenge and I thought that pulled the focus away from Tara's death. I thought the writers made a mistake with that as Tara's death became forgotten really quickly and everything became all about Willow. Sure, ultimately it was about's Willow and her addiction to power, but the writers should have thought about the other characters as well. In the end, Tara's death showed like it only affected Willow and no one else. Gah! I'm hoping I'm making sense here.

Alright, I'm going to try to answer all these questions so have fun reading everyone ;D. First, the deaths and how they affected me: Jesse- His death really didn't affect me at all. Period...I'm not cold hearted, don't worry. Jenny- Her death was really upsetting, not only because I liked her, but also the way the characters took it. Willow crying on the phone was just pure heart break. Joyce- Everyone usually talks about how upsetting her death was, but it didn't affect me too much. Though, Anya's speech on how she didn't understand things and Dawn and Buffy in Forever was upsetting :/. Tara- Tara's death definitely affected me a lot. I knew I would miss Tara, and seeing Willow the way she was made it worse. Anya- Ah! I was so sad after Anya died. Especially because she saved someone else. Thinking about how much she grew was definitely bitter sweet. Dawn- Dawn's death would have upset me, if it had happened. Buffy and the gang would have been devestated, and Buffy would feel like a failure. That would not have been good for anyone =/. Angel- If Angel had actually died, it would have affected me a lot. If I had seen Becoming without knowing Angel would come back, it would have hit me hard. There are many what if questions you can do with Buffy and deaths, but I feel most deaths were needed in the plot line. I always wondered why Tara especially had to die, but it changed Willow's character a lot, and it was needed for the story to progress. Every death was needed to help the characters grow up and accept the responsibilty of life and adulthood. And if Dawn had jumped into the portal, well, I don't know what would of happened. Would Willow have tried to bring her back? And if she had, would it have worked? Doubtful. That definitely would have been bad, since Buffy would have failed in saving her sister, which would have lame. Plus, Buffy diving into the portal was very moving for me, and the show would not have been the same without it. Alright, I'm done. I love to make you all read .

Anya- Ah! I was so sad after Anya died. Especially because she saved someone else. Thinking about how much she grew was definitely bitter sweet. Well Anya didnt actually die saving anyone. Well unless you count that whole thing as they saved us all from the First. Andrew only said that she died saving him to help Xander. Anya's was more of a wow, as it was so fast, yet when you think about it not really unexpected. Who in their right mind would pair Andrew and Anya up to fight the forces of evil? Joyce's had no affect on me. I was sad for Buffy and Dawn but she was never really a character i cared for. Perhaps mums watching the show who have teenagers would have had more sympathy with Joyce as they could relate to the struggles of motherhood but i couldnt. Jesse's death was to simply show us fans that Joss would be willing tobump anyone off at any given time. Tara's was just blah, ooo now Willow's evil, fun fun. I know this is about character deaths, but characters leaving sometimes had worse affect on me than a character who died. Both Oz and Riley's departures made me sadder than Tara's/Joyce's/Anya's deaths lol

Joyce's death affected me.
As for Tara's death, I see it as more of a plot twist than anything else. They kill her, and use it to bring on the climax of the season. I did care for Willow at the end of the episode, but once it moved onto the whole vengeance thing, the impact was definitely lost.
As for Anya's death, it affected me in a "pointless casualty of war" kinda way. I was sad to see her die, but she died quickly and in the heat of battle. It wasn't designed to be a tear jerker, just to add some impact to the finale. Had there been episodes after it, with Xander in mourning, I think I would have felt more - but that really wasn't the point of her death.

The effects of Joyces death affected me, but not the actual death but now i miss her!
Taras death. I agree Allan, it was a plot twist thats why it was powerful the death again didnt really affect me but what a shocking death, it wasnt expected, and damn, I was in shock.
I miss Anya, but her death was sudden and there was to much going on to have time to feel her death, but i liked anya, and shame she had to die, but out of the scoobies id miss her the least.

I forgot to comment about Anya's death...
Anya's death happened too quick for me to be really affected. Bam! She's cut into two and then the scene switches before my brain could really process it. I was more in shock than anything else.
But I have to say, I expect more feeling from Xander when he heard about Anya's death.

Anya's death is one I actually forget about. I was watching Buffy this morning and was thinking, "Hey, wonder if Anya's going to show up in the comics?" Uh...no. But yeah, way too quick.

I think my heart stopped for a second when Anya died. It was so quick, but it got to me. I loved Anya - and it was a jaw-dropping moment for me. Jenny's death affected me only because it showed how terrible Angelus was, not because I cared about her that much. The reactions were heart-breaking, though.

Jennys death to, it was really affective because of the way he done it, grabbed her, broke her neck and left to watch its effects on buffy, that was so callous and evil, you have to adore angelus for that.
and LoL I forget anya died sometimes to,

Jenny's death was so disrespectful. I don't know if you can adore Angelus for that! He's very cruel, and I don't think that's admirable.

I think Nico meant as far as an evil villain is concerned. It was nasty, and really made you realise that he's callous.

Yeah, I suppose.
Jonathan's death was sad. He was just so cute and funny, and for him to be killed by his friend was just tragic.

With the use of the word "adorab'e", I'm just stuck wondering what "Passion" would have been like if Angelus was "Smile Time"d and turned into a puppet before killing Jenny...
