Who are your favourite authors, and which of their books would you recommend reading for others? I have a lot of favourites, Jack Higgens being an alltime one. Read Thunderpoint first if you want to try one of his They are a series.

One of my recent favorite authors is Mike Gayle he writes romantic comedy's but from the male point of view, there very funny. I started with his most recent book first but his very 1st book is 'My legendary Girlfriend' which is next on my to read list. none of the books are a series so it doesn't matter which one you choose

Ugh. Much as I love the LoTR trilogy and its a fantastic story, it was written badly imo. JRR Tolkien goes into far too much details about boring aspects. You could easily cut out a hundred pages from each of the books and not have it affect the story at all

Yeah, it's true. I just think that he had the pictures in his mind of what the story was and he wanted everyone to see the exact same thing he saw. But yeah, I agree way too detailed. I believe there was a page or two on just what a sword looked like. Lol, it made me laugh. But he had a brilliant imagination, no doubt.
Oh, also the detail is kind of good in a way. I'm sure it helped Peter Jackson with the movies. TrHe could find out what a weapon or city looked like just by reading the book. Which I'm sure was helpful in the making of the films.

Detail is good sometimes. But it simply made the books almost impossible to read.

*bump* So what are people's favourite authors? Who would you recommend? What style of books do they write? My favourite is still Jack Higgens, am yet to find an author I like better - though his newer books are sadly slipping in quality Other authors I love are Clive Cussler (he wrote the book the movie Sahara was based on if anyone saw that), Lee Child, Matthew Reilly (his books are set in the US but he's actually Australian - and only in his twenties, young and very very good) and Anne Rice - though like Higgens, her newer books are slipping in quality. Oh and her newest i refuse to read because its about Christ and I'm not into reading that sort of thing. I liked her Witches and Vampire books. There are many more authors I love and would recommend... but first what about everyone else?

I've just started reading a Lee Child book I really like it so far.
I don't tend to stray too far from tv realted books like Buffy, Alias & CSI so I'm not sure who to recommend..... Mike Gayle ^^ is still good though

I strongly reccommend Wizard of the Grove by Tanya Huff. It's been my favorite book for nearly 10 years.
Also, the entire Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon is AMAZING and such a good love story. It's the only series I've ever seen that rides that fine line between romance and action novel to be readable by both men AND women.

Still do. I even picked her for a school project where I had to write to an author. Her books always cheer me up.

My favourite writers are:
- Chuck Palahniuk, and I really recommend Fight Clb (naturally); Survivor (my favourite book of his); and Choke. I'm really looking forward to Rant, which is apparently his take on dystopian future.
- Elmore Leonard, and I recommend Killshot, Tishimongo Blues, and Pagan Babies (which should really be made into a movie), as well as the ones that have been made into movies (the books are among his best).
There are a few others, who I can't think of right now... But I don't chase their work as much as these two.

I'd like to toss in a shameless plug for Neil Gaiman I suggest reading his novels if you like fairytales that surprise your or if you like graphic novels that make you think. His series of graphic novels "The Sandman Library" really made me change my perspective on life. Maybe I'm just weird :-p but I think it has that effect.

Stephenie Meyer and Libba Bray are two of my favourite authors. I've only read two of each of their books (actually I believe they've both only written two), but I loved every minute of each of them.

Also, the entire Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon is AMAZING and such a good love story. It's the only series I've ever seen that rides that fine line between romance and action novel to be readable by both men AND women. This is definitly a serie I recommend as well. It's a really great read and you can't put down the books. You just wanna go on and on. If you read it when going to bed you'll stay up for hours because you really can't put it down. I don't know if he's been mentioned before but Dan Brown is a great read too. Both the books about Robert Langdon (among them, the Da Vinci Code with Tom Hanks in the movie) but also his other books are a great read too. He explores both sience and religion and he's not afraid to bring out conspiracy and digg into the whole illuminati thing that has been talked about for hundreds of years. He's definitly worth your time. If they ever translate the Millenium books into english by Stieg Larsson (swedish writer) you should definitly give them a chance. They've got alot to offer as well. I'm just about to start with book number two and then I have one more to go with and I can't wait! Also a great read.
