Much of the joy in picking up a new DVD - for me at least - is the special features. So much so, that when I buy a DVD that doesn't have much, I feel disappointed. Do you guys care about features? And would you buy a double disc edition over a single disc one, even at an additional cost? I've even been known to buy movies I'm not a fan of for the features, the most embarassing one being Catwoman because of a half hour doco on the history of the character.

No, I'm not really that crazy about special features. They're nice when I get them, but I'm going to buy the DVD if I like the show or movie, not the features.

I love special features. I get upset when I get a DVD and there aren't any good featurettes. But I wouldn't sink down to Allan's level and buy Catwoman.

For the record, when I got Catwoman, it was part of a bulk deal - five DVDs for a cheap price which escapes me ($40?), which worked out cheaper than buying for individually. So, really, I was paid to take it.

Nah, I buy DVDs for the movie and not the features. The features to me are just a bonus. I always look forward to the movie instead. It's probably why I have not many DVDs in my collection.

I'm a feature junkie. I feel completely ripped off when there aren't any Commentaries are golden. I'll listen to any commentary on pretty much any film

I agree, Loz, commentaries are great - even when they're pretty boring.

I like movies and TV Shows I buy to have features. Its not essential, but I will always by the two disc special edition if their is one and I get narked if there aren't any.

Ooh I love special features. It's definitely something that I look for in buying DVDs. In the case of movies I really like, yes I think I would buy the special edition. I was very disappointed that QaF season 1 didn't come with any special features. It was very expensive too!

So what movies/shows have the best features/commentaries?

Fight Club really stands out to me. Possibly because it was the first double disc DVD set that was ever released, but that was cool. Black Hawk Down has a great four disc edition with historical documentaries. The Superman series 13 disc set is simply amazing, too...

My absolute favorites are the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions. So many extras covering everything. Not to mention three different commentaries on every movie (Director and writers; cast; and design).
All of Jossverse are really good, too. I've only been disappointed with lack of bloopers. I love bloopers. Serenity is my favorite of his stuff.
Pan's Labyrinth has good extras and commentary, too.
The LOST DVD extras are really sweet, too. No spoilers, but they show you stuff you wouldn't have noticed before that's really interesting.

Yeah, I agree completely on the LOTR extended editions. They're really exhaustive. I'd appreciate more commentaries on the Jossverse DVDs. To me, 4-6 a season isn't quite enough for my taste. But I'm just greedy.

I agree. And I only really listen to Joss' commentaries, which mean even less.

Yeah, me too. The ones by the writers/producers just aren't as interesting.

I don;t listen to commentaries much, I end up just wanting to watch whatever is on without it. I hate when a movie comes out I have been looking forward to, and there are no features at all, or just a trailer like a lot of older movies have. ANd more should have bloopers, I agree.

Baz Lurhmann always raises the bar with extras. His Red Curtin trilogy all have at least 3 commentaries along with behind the scenes and doco's. The Notebook is a good one, as is Wayne's World, Walk the Line and Armageddon. From Dusk till Dawn is great - the behind the scenes feature length doco is utterly brilliant. Commentaries? The Star Wars IV-VI ones are wonderful. I loved finding out that one of my favourite movie moments ever was completely spur of the moment (Han's 'I know' to Leia). The commentary for Zoolander is a pisser. Stiller is a funny guy. There is also one on Dodgeball where Stiller and Vince Vaughn have a massive 'fight' which is extremely amusing. The Love Actually one is great because all Hugh Grant does is take the piss for a couple of hours. I love the Pride and Prejudice commentary - it literally makes me cry And i listen to any commentaries from anyone involved in making a film. Partly out of respect for what they do (just like i won't leave a film or turn it off until every single credit has rolled) and also because if the trouble has been put into putting one down i figure they must have something of note to say.

Dodgeball's comedy is one of the funniest ones out there. I also love the "alternate ending". Great stuff. I wasn't a real fan of the Star Wars commentaries. That said, I already knew stuff like the "I know" bit, so the lack of learning tidbits could be to blame.

I got the DVD for Requeim for a Dream recently and it seems to have quite a few special features, but I lent it out and haven't had a chance to watch them...
*shakes fist* Where's my DVD?!
