It depends what else he had on. If he didn't know when he'd be filming that and he had other work in the picture then really it is understandable

Well if he ends up making another Hellboy over The Hobbit, then that is a mistake. But I am just bitter. I'm completely bummed he is backing out. Would have been perfect for the movie.

So why isn't Peter Jackson directing?

A gazillion years ago he said it was because he didn't have time because of other films he's been working on. Maybe now he'll do it.

Oh good! I think it would be very hard to follow LOTR - and if PJ did direct, there would be a consistent feel across the movies.

I saw that; pretty exciting! Irene, you should go try out! (Even though you're pretty tall, right?)

I'm probably too dark too! Unless Indian hobbits exists. But with all the recent troubles with paying NZ actors, it seems less likely that it's going to be shot here.

It's weird that they're struggling so much to get this film made, considering how successful LOTR was.

The Hobbit as a novel is just a more simple read so people can reread it more often and it's more family friendly. I like the story of Lord of the Rings better though. I agree I 'm not sure why there's such a problem with producing the movie. Just start the damn thing already!

Martin Freeman has been cast as Bilbo Baggins. Kinda figured he would be. He looks very much like a hobbit.
