Looking over a few posts I've noticed that season 4 was most commonly held as the worst season, however Glenn has said that it is his favorite and I have since changed my mind on it.
So my question is - Is season 4 as bad as we all originally though?
I remember when it was first aired and just about everybody hated, it was criticised left, right and center, but were we forgetting about some of the excellence? Something Blue, Hush, This Year Girl, Primeval ect..
I'm not sure whether I just miss the show and the excitement of new episodes but season 4 does have a new appeal to me. I even enjoy the initiative and Adam, plus Spike is funnier than he ever was in season 2
So what does everybody think?

Season 4 is my highlight Season
I liked the entire feel of the Season, away from high school and starting a new life.
For me the characters of Spike, Willow, Xander, Anya were never as good in any other Season. I love everything about this Season, i love the Initiative, it makes sense to me that the Government would be aware of goings on and that they would try to control it their own will rather than stifle it. Riley was for me and possibly me alone a great addition to the cast. I found him funny and charming and something that Buffy needed after her thing with Angel. Spike was simply brilliant in this Season from his mocking of Buffy about Parker in his first appearance to his blunt points of view to the Gang. I was sad t see Oz go and Tara arrive but i prefered Season 4 Tara anyways.
So many good episodes as you have mentioned, the comedy with Something Blue, the horror with Hush the action with Primeval and the complete randomness of Restless.
Also we got Faith back which is just a huge plus

believe me your not the only one who likes Riley!! I can't tell you how many times I've had to defend him.
I agree with everything you've said apart for Willow, for me Willow had her best season in 6 & 7, she was great in 4 but I think she was lacking a little. To me Willow isn't at her best unless she was exceling at something, seasons 1-3 she was the brains and the computer wiz, with the intro of collage Willow lost this which was sad to see. She did however pick up the magic but things didn't really start to happen until season 5, the power consumed her in 6 and in 7 she was at the top of her game again she'd learnt how to control and use the magic that was in her

Im the other way on Willow as im a non Willow fan unfortunately.
I enjoyed her Seasons 1-4 and then fell out with from 5-7 i was hoping she wasnt going to be a regular in Season 7 but she was.
What i found interesting about Willow in this is that she had been planning college from a very young age, but when it came down to it im sure it wasnt how she had envisioned it at all. She lost her boyfriend very early on and we got a view of her future magic meddling, she went through some very emotional changes regarding her sexuality and was also feeling very cut off from her friends for quite a while.

yeh it definately wasn't the experience she thought it would be, but I guess thats true of most collage students, some find its better- some are disapointed.
Just noticed you put Xander in there as having his best season- can't say I agree, he had hardly anything to do except sit around and help Giles or be embarrased by Anya! he did play an important part in the last few episodes which was great but before that he was a little lost

For me Xander has always been a character that i enjoy in pretty much every Season except maybe 6. But he never really has a stand out Season, i put said he was best in this one as i was thinking back to his speech to Buffy in The Freshman his dealing with his friends being off at college while he was moved to the basement and the fact that it was his plan that saved the day and he was recognised as the heart of the group by the writers

Ah good points, I would have singled out season 2 & 3 as his best but ...meh he never really has a bad season but he was under used I think in season 4 & 7

I like season 4, it has some of the best episodes on the show. However I do not like the Initiative storyline AT ALL. Its boring. I don't like the initiative itself, Maggie Walsh, most of the soldiers... bah. I also hated Adam. After all the hoo ha about how to kill him, it didn't seem that hard. His overall plan was ludicrous and he was a boring and bland big bad. For that reason, there are several episodes in this season that are terrible and boring to watch. So it is not and never will be one of the best seasons to me, because though it has some standout episodes, and some great characterisation, the main plot does nothing for me, its boring.

I have to agree with Beck on this one. Season 4 was good, IMO, but the Initiative story was just blah. Also, I didn't like the Ruffy relationship, but that's for a ship discussion, not a season review. I really liked the characterization other than that, and many of the episodes were great. I also like the introduction of Tara, I believe it was perfect. And the stand out episodes...Something Blue, Hush, Primevil, Restless, This Year's Girl, Who Are You (the last two because of Faith )... The episode that I really hated was Where the Wild Things Are. Just Riley and Buffy having sex basically. Pointless beyond believe.

Season 4 was very good, the main reason I always put it last is because I prefer the others more.
I liked the new characters Tara and Riley and it has some memorable episodes like Hush, Something Blue, New Moon Rising ect...
Overall I liked it, I didn't like the very last episode at all 'Restless', just never really got into it.

Restless was awsome, I just totally loved the randomless of the whole thing, plus it gave us some great clues for the next season. Of course Giles song is one of the best scenes ever!

I have always enjoyed individual eps from season 4 but found the arc's overall season rather weak. It was a wonderful concept, but poorly done in my opinion. So, I admire much of season 4 because of certain episodes, character arcs, etc. but don't admire the season as a whole.

I love season 4. The return of Spike, Anya became a full-time cast member, and the brief return of bad slayer Faith. The theme of the season is change. Season 4 has some of my favorite episodes:
Something Blue Hush!! Who Are You? Superstar Restless
However I think the way they handled the initiative was a bit shoddy. I think it was really good to have military intervention, though. This town is overrun with demons and vampires and what, the government doesn't know/care? Please.

My think season 4 had one of my favorite season enders, everything that happened in the Pentagon headquarters, and Buffy's fight with Adam.

Yeah, I liked "Restless." However, I've never considered it a finale. I mean, I know it is since it's the last episode of the season, but it just seems like an after-thought. "Oh, we need to make one more episode for the season, so let's do this." It's a great episode, but not worthy of season finale status. Of course, that may just be that I have high standards for my season finales. I did enjoy seeing all the dreams, though, and find the episode thoroughly entertaining.

I think it was nice to have a story played out after the big battle to see how the gang copes after something as huge as that has gone down. Personally I think it was TV genius that gave us so many clues for the coming season.
I liked how it got me excited for the new season instead of it being about the end of a year

Yes but thank the Lord it was better than "Home" in Angel Season 4
It was really good to shy away from the smash and crash of previous finale's and show us what Joss really is capable of.

I find myself loving it the more I watch it, although I do still see it more as individual episodes than a season. Does that make any sense?
