To me, I think it got better each season. The ante was upped, and in most cases, the characterisation was handled brilliantly, as the characters progressed. Each season had some groan worthy moments, but on a whole, I think that unlike Btvs, the bar was raised with each season.

Thats the thing with season 5 though, I didn't think the characterisation was handled well at all. Angel, the hero, became unlikeable, and Spike was reverted back to his season 4 BtVS self most of the time, which was very bad characterisation. I've mentioned all this in the personalities thread though. Then they had the minor characters who were annoying as, Harmony and Eve - ick. Lorne was underused, he was hardly there It got better at the very end, but it was still well below par from the other seasons imo.

As far as I am concerned, Angel went downhill at the very moment Connor came back from Quortoth. Seasons 1,2 and 3 were wonderful seasons (3's the best) but 4 and 5 were terrible. Season 4 destroyed charcaters like Cordelia and Wesley and it had a crap storyline, bar the episodes with Angelus, awakening and Home and Spin The Bottle.
Season 5 was worse. It had all new charcaters that were rubbish, such as Eve. Spike was in it which was a terrible idea formed to make Joss more money. Angel characters such as Lorne and Cordelia were non existent, but were replaced by charcaters above. Plus, it also had a crap storyline.
So to sum up, the first 3 seasons were up there with Btvs S1-3, the best Buffy seasons, but 4 and 5 were down there with Btvs S4,6 and 7.

Woah I love season 4, I thought it was an awesome storyline. I agree they ruined Cordelia, but I see that as Jasmine instead of Cordy, but I loved Wesleys transformation and it really showed the strength Alexis Denisof has as an actor. The entire storyline with the Beast was compelling, and my only real problem with the season is Jasmine's appearance - those episodes to me were very weak.
Season 5 missed characters such as Cordelia, Lilah and Lorne, who while there was hardly seen.

I have enjoyed all 4 seasons so far I thought they all brought something very different but I think season 4 had better episodes although the whole Cordy/Angel love thing was annoying & Connor. Cordelia's character was ruined for me before she ascended and became Jasmine she went from a great character to a mopey love infested one.
Season 4 didn't destroy Wesley it showed more depth to his character. I love Lilah I think she is a great character.
Season 5 (we have only watched about 5 episodes) loses points for Harmony, Season 4 Spike and Eve.

I realised I've never answered in this thread. I think season 1 and 3 were my favourite. Hated season 2 but now, I can't remember why. I know it's something about how annoying Angel was in that season. Didn't like season 5 either but I did enjoyed the second half of it. I only have season 1 on DVD so I'm just going by what I remember watching on TV.

Season 2 when they went to Lorne's homeworld was a bit blergh, was that why?

I liked that! We get to meet Groo and Fred and get to watch Joss do that happy dance.

Lornes home world was weird I kept having to remind myself I was watching Angel and not Stargate . Season 5 has been pretty bad but I thought having Cordy die was good, I loved her character before she got all annoying with the love but her death caught me off guard I thought her episode in season 5 was really good but what is it with killing off the chicks !

The problem with Season 5 was largely what they did to the characters. Angel became unlikable, Spike reverted to his Season 4 Buffy self and his sacrifices and change were forgotten about, Lorne was barely there, Gunn suddenly became this smart lawyer, Harmony shouldn't have been there, neither should Eve, and Cordy was dead. I do like that they got rid of Conner, and I have no complaints about Wesley or Fred.

The Spike thing was the most confusing aspect of Season 5 Angel for me. I agree he went backwards and after all of the progression he made in Buffy more care should have been used with writing him.
What was Eve's purpose? she seemed to be there one minute and gone the next.

She was the liaison between the Senior Partners and Angel Investigations when they took over W&H.

Adam Baldwin was a much better Liaison . Eve seemed pretty useless and quite annoying. Another season five filler character?

I don't think she was filler, she had her purpose at the start. She was just written terribly and the actress sucked.

Yeah, I agree. She was just written badly and was casted wrongly. If Adam Baldwin started as 'Eve' from the beginning, it would have been more enjoyable.
The only reason Spike was on Angel was to boost ratings in my opinion. Spike's story ended in Buffy and it should have stayed that way.

I liked seeing Spike with Fred, it was good for him to hear that someone other than Buffy believed in him and connect with someone else human (other than Buffy and Dawn) . I liked him on Angel, he made me laugh my arse off although I agree he was clearly a ratings booster and at times badly written but I don't care, Spike/Angel just have me laughing all the time .

I never wanted to buy the other seasons on DVD but it was cheap so I couldn't help it. Will watch it as soon as it gets here and then I'll state why hate that season. And I guess it looks like I have to get the rest of the seasons now.

I of course like season five the best cause it had Spike in it but I didn't understand why they were making the hero of their show into a bit of a clown, I agree with Beck Angel was even more unlikable than usual in season five and the Conner storyline was just trippy.

How can you like Season 5 best because of Spike? As a Spike fan aren't you unhappy how much they ruined his character in it?

I have to wonder along with Shaun here. I'll admit to liking Season 5 and I'll admit to liking the idea of seeing Spike again. I'll even admit that he had his moments during the season. However, throughout most of it, he was something so far below what he'd become in BtVS when we last saw him that what his character became on AtS was obviously bad decision making on behalf of the people in charge of the show. It took the entire season for his character to return to something resembling what he had been in "Chosen." Was it simply because he was on the silver screen again? I know many people who were excited when James Marsters signed onto Season 5, but not many--if any at all--who would support the way his character was written.
