I don't think they ruined his character in it. I thoroughly enjoyed his character throughout the season. Yeah he wasn't as martyr-Spike as he was in Chosen, but how long do you think that would really last? Spike is Spike. And that's who I saw in the season.

I love Spike and I hated seeing so much character growth thrown away. There were glimpses of new Spike, when he was with Fred for instance, but for the most part they turned him into the petty Spike he used to be But I hated what they did to Angel's character far more than i hated what they did to Spike's.

I realised I've never answered in this thread. I think season 1 and 3 were my favourite. Hated season 2 but now, I can't remember why. I know it's something about how annoying Angel was in that season. Didn't like season 5 either but I did enjoyed the second half of it. I only have season 1 on DVD so I'm just going by what I remember watching on TV. I recently bought season 2 online. I never wanted to buy the other seasons on DVD but it was cheap so I couldn't help it. Will watch it as soon as it gets here and then I'll state why hate that season. And I guess it looks like I have to get the rest of the seasons now. Yes, I remember why I hated season 2. 'Cause of how much of an ass Angel is. Haaate his little obsession with Darla and how he treated the gang for it. Why did he fire the gang anyway? I'm up to The Thin Dead Line so I haven't heard any explanation on why he fired them yet. I cheered when Cordelia told him off at the hospital after Wesley got shot.

I have some love hate issues with the Angel series in general but overall I do like the show. I voted for season 2 because I really enjoyed Angel's decent into madness. Also Darla. That having been said I really enjoy certain things from every season as well as hating several things from most of the seasons.
Season 1: Set the stage and really showed Angel taking the stage. Doyle was awesome and the guest appearances were fantastic. The opening monologue of Spikes were he talks about Angel's "nancy boy hair gel" is one of the greatest bits in tv history. I liked Cordy despite her only loosely being the same character as in Btvs. It's a pity that the stories weren't more cohesive and with a few exceptions there was no character development.
Season 2: Angel becomes dark without turning into Angeleus. Darla is returned to us with a great arc. Wolfram and Hart continue to be interesting. Wesley actually gets to have a character other then "british watcher-turned rogue". Gunn more or less the same thing except "angry black man". Cordy's at her best. Finally we get to meet Lorne who's a completly different kind of character. The final arc of the season is a little weak but there were some cool dance moves.
Season 3: So many good and bad things this season. I actually stopped watching Angel for a little while this season and missed what turned out to be one of the coolest episodes of the series (when they go to the ballet). I could really go on about this season but I won't. Instead I will just say this is when Wesley starts to be the coolest character in the entire show. I don't like Angel and Cordy as a couple.
Season 4: I hate Cordy and Connor as a couple. Seperately, I don't much care for the each character either. Angelus is back! (Yay!) Faith is back! (Yay!) There's some great tie-ins with Buffy (Yay!) Wesley is dark and awesome (I might have a bit of a crush) There's a confusing and inexplicable Big bad (huh?) The show becomes like a roller-coaster. Also love Liliah even more.
Season 5: Starts with a pardigm shift. The good guys are now the bad guys that work for the good guys or a least claim to.? Still there are some great bits in this season, mixed right in with some real crap. They tried to flip Gunn's character on his head. Didn't really work. They kill Fred. It's sad but it does work. Wesley is awesome. Still. Eve sucks. Badly. Lindsey returns. Seemingly contridicting the reason/character that left. Connor's character acutally redeems himself in my eyes. Cordellia has one of the most approriate departures I've seen on tv and makes up for the crappy way she had effectively already left the show. Lorne is wasted until the end of the season where he shows his quality. Angel himself become an institution (in more ways then one).We have a couple of increadibly BAD guest appearances by Buffy alumni (for gods sake they couldn't even get SMG but they have a whole episode about her?). Then there's Spike. Here's my take on Spike this season. He's there as a publicity stunt and because Joss didn't want Buffy to end. Now, I really liked Spike in season's 3 and 4 as well as parts of season's 5, 6 and 7. However, there were times when he got pretty lame. Spike in Angel was pretty lame at times. He often seemed like he reverted back to what he was like in the earlier seasons. That kind of made sense. He lived for over a hundred years and for most of that he was a bloodthirsty insecure macho ass. Also, most people tend to revert to their less "mature" selves when they "go home" and spend time around their parents and siblings. I know I do. Spike had some great momments in Angel, despite some of those pretty lame ones and I don't think it in any way negates his sacrifice and character in Chosen.

Season Four. There was a time period where I lost interest in following Buffy and Angel. It wasn't until Once More with Feeling that I started watching Buffy religiously again, for Angel that episode was Spin the Bottle. From there it went into the storyarc with The Beast, Cordelia turning evil and manipulating Connor, Angel becoming Angelus, eternal darkness, breaking Faith out of prison, Faith versus The Beast, Faith versus Angelus, Faith owning Connor for being a brat, the poison which leads her inside Angel's head, Willow coming to town to restore Angel's soul, Cordelia giving birth, and Jasmine. Granted, I lost interest by the time Jasmine came around, but I can't remember the last time I was so invested with everything that was going on in Angel. The weakness in Season Four is that individual episodes didn't stand out as much as the storyarc did. I could tell you what happened, but not in which episodes.
