I think most people would have had to have a tear or two I've read it twice now. And read some bits many times I'm feeling the need to go back to Philosopher's Stone and read them all over again.

Loved it, read it in about 5 hours (was in London so got the book at midnight). Adored the epilogue. Had quite a few tears when it was all over. The end of HP kinda symbolizes the end of my childhood, having started reading it when I was 9.
Was a bit annoyed to find out that Snape was in love with Lily. I'd always just thought that was a silly theory. Still, nice to know that he's not evil...just a jerk.
Question - so what happened to Ariana Dumbledore that she went "halfway insane"? The theory seems to be that she was raped by the muggles.

It didn't actually say she was raped, but it could be implied, either that or she was badly harrassed in some way - enough to hurt her that badly. I thought the Snape/Lily thing was well handled and made sense :dunno:

Made sense, but I was a bit disappointed for some reason.
How awesome was Molly's "NOT MY DAUGHTER YOU BITCH!"
Aaand I love that Neville turned out the be the student who became a professor.

WHo else could have become the Professor? No one but Neville was "level headed" enough. Luna reminds me of a young Trelawny. Same space cadet existance! Love her and her pudding. The epilogue was written really well. Finished the series off neatly. Nice to see that Harry and Draco are co-exsisting now they have grown. Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy. But i still wanna know what happens with their kids... Maybe a spin off... James, Lily and Rose - the Next Generation...

JK has given a bit more detail about future events.
Harry is head of the Auror department, while the government is under Kingsley's rule. Ginny played for a womans Quiddich team. Ron joined George to co run Weasleys Wizard Wheezes and Hermione went into the ministry to help other magical creatures.

Well, I bet you all know about how I ran the Harry Potter Haters Brigade, but I LOVED DH. It was the best book by far. I loved how everything was resolved happily, even though there were tragic deaths. I loved that there were hardly any boring parts to read, almost every part had intense action and suspense.
Plus, the part with Snape's memories was one of the best parts imo, because it showed what kind of man he really was. I also loved that he loved Lily.
Overall, I just think the book was very well done and it restored my faith in HP ;D

Well that's excellent to hear, Laura! (AND WELCOME BAAAAAACK!!)
Jo said that she intended DH to be for the people who had grown up with Harry - that's why it's so adult. I'm thinking that for the movie they're either going to cut so much, or it's going to be rated M.

Well first I gotta say the book wasn't THAT great. That get peoples attention? Hear me out and give it some thought. Let's continue. Yes I liked it, yes it was the best book of the series (arguably). No, I have read (many) better books. Part of the problem is that I have the strong feeling I don't like the main characters very much. Ron's a whiner, Hermione is a arrogant know-it-all and Harry is kind of a jerk who is only a hero because he's forced to be (over and over). The book was a touch on the predictable side (but hey, what was she going to do kill off Harry? No way). The first half/third of the book nothing happened (sorry there was a wedding between two support characters) and there was minimal character development. Then they wind up at the Malfoy's mansion (by sheer fluke) and things get good! Dobby actually redeems his whole character in a tragically heroic end, and the "good guys" managed to get a clue. The action and suspense both get amped up and Harry begins have revelations like it's going out of style. Finally you have the climactic battle in which good overcomes evil by making the ultimate sacrifice. Throw some mostly pointless but very hear trenching deaths in and wrap it up with a (weak) epilogue which says they all live happily ever after. It definitely had good qualities for instance the humanizing of Dumbledore. Let's face it you don't get where Dumbledore was without being at least a little ruthless and manipulative but it still shows he was always working on the side of the angels. I loved the way his story played out. However, I'd have to say IMO the best two characters have to be Snape and Neville. Snape is easily the most complex character in the series and Rowling did a bang up job building his story from the get go (although it was never really in doubt he was working against You-know-who). That being said his complexity can all be boiled down to one thing: love. Unrequited love no less. For that he gives up everything, and I mean everything. Of course he still doesn't much like Harry (can't argue with that) but his only reward was a slow painful death! And he more or less knew that was what to expect! That's devotion. Then there's Neville, who is the most under rated student at Hogwarts steps up to the plate as the most truly heroic character. When he pulls out the sword and lops off the snake's head I felt giddy, actually giddy! Unlike Harry who is constantly dragged into the fight against Voldemort (often whining as he goes) Neville makes a conscious choice to walk up to the big bad and spit in his eye! Don't forget Neville's family was struck down by Voldemort just as much as Harry's but Neville didn't get the fame or the magical protection/aura that Harry did. He's a hero. And when it's over he becomes a plant teacher. The Greeks would have been proud. Okay, so sorry this was so long and I know it won't be super popular but that's my opinion.

Dobby actually redeems his whole character in a tragically heroic end He didn't really have to redeem himself, though. I'm not sure what you mean.

I don't think he was annoying...I mean, sure, he had some habits, like hurting himself if he thought he said something wrong, but that's from his environment- he lived with the Malfoys for a looong time.
How, exactly, does one "redeem" oneself from being annoying, anyway? They get...less annoying...?

He's annoying because it was completly ineffectual at helping Harry and was there mostly as a comic relief (wasn't funny) and to be kind of pathetic and cute. I don't really like the ewoks either. He redeems himself because not only does he help Harry in a spectacular way, but he puts himself in harms way to do it, even going as far as giving his life. I do also have to admit I found him less annoying in the books then he was in the movie. He was freaking Jar Jar Binks more misguided cousin for some reason.

Eh, well, I completely disagree. Dobby was really sweet and I was quite upset when he died.

I found him annoying until the final book. He had his purpose, but that doesn't make him less of a Jar Jar Binks type character

Agree he was annoying. I disliked Dobby up until the end pretty much. I know he was trying to help but he irked me greatly. I was sad when he died though

I was thinking about something the other day: when Harry left to go to Hogwarts, he wasn't told how to get to the platform. That's because Aunt Petunia had already gone there! She's so mean. Plus, Snape was the 'awful boy she heard telling Lily about Azkaban'. I always thought it was James...
