I had heard it was bad, but I really wasn't prepared for how bad

Did you try chain restaurants/coffee shops or did you browse local ones as well? I know some businesses locally (Binghamton, New York) that know how to make a mean cup of coffee. I've been brewing a lot more tea as of late; it's kept me so energized that I haven't felt a need for coffee as much as i used to. It's odd but cool, I guess?

We tried a few places, chain and little local ones. I found one coffee in one little place in Venice Beach that I would class as real coffee. Not great coffee, but ok. The rest was disgusting. What you Americans call good coffee is not good

A lot of it is garbage, I would agree with that XD The best coffee I've honestly ever had was made by my host family when I lived in Vancouver, who were from Croatia. They called it Turkish coffee...which I think is just the method in which they prepared it, based on context clues from them having made it and also a quick Google search just now. It was delightful :3
