OK they have one of these on Buffyworld, and I figured why not start one here? It'll give us something to talk about at least. So we'll go through the episodes from the beginning and everyone can give their opinions on what they thought about it. When its time to move on to the next episode, I'll start that So Welcome to the Hellmouth. I thought it was a great start to the show. The characters were introduced well, and were all interesting, and considering their budget and that they had one (maybe two) set to work with, they did a fantastic job. I absolutely adore Buffy and Giles interaction in this episode, with her struggling to stay away from her calling. And stuffy Giles is so funny One thing I didn't like was Principal Flutie. Honestly, could they have cast a worse person? Maybe he's supposed to be so irritating...anyway 8/10 from me.

wow this is good timeing I just happened to watch that ep yesturday! yay
So I can't really say that I watched Buffy right from the begining coz I only caught it in season 2. But once I got the vids I watched it + couldn't believe how well everybody was introduced + how quickly, because within about 20mins everybody was set up.
I just love stuffy Gile he is absolutely fantastic!!! But I was glad that it didn't last too long. The diologe is very snappy + you can definately see how it caught people straight away. I think Principle Flutie was meant to be a bit irritating but over the 5 eps he was in it he did get softer.
I thought the way they connected Buffy, Willow and Xander straight away was brillient + beleveable unlike in some shows. Angel- how cute + gorgous was he!!!!! and so mysterious I just love that scene in the alley.
Oh + it just pains me to see Willow THAT shy all over again!!
I give it 8/10

This was the last season I watched so it was interesting seeing the characters really young. The quality wasn't great compared to the later seasons, but it was an OK premiere. Seeing Darla was a shock, she was very different on Angel. Cordelia was fantastic. I love that bitchy side of her. I don't know what I'd rate it, together with The Harvest maybe a 7 or 8.

Well i remember watching this for the first time on TV like it was yesterday when it was actually what 8 years ago..... I love all the characters introductions- especially Xander and Willow. Giles was great, Buffy was great and Angel was just plain hot and oh so mysterious. The storyline is well thought out for a pilot - it doesn't spend too long on set up or intoduction it just jumps right on in- and i like that and as Beck said for the budget they had (or didn't have) it looked good. 7/10 for me.

Well finally OK we'll move on to The Harvest I suppose I really should have included this one with WTTH...oh well. A continue on from WTTH, I thought it was great. I loved how Buffy fooled Luke and staked him while he was thinking it was sunrise...hehe! Xander 'accidently' staking Jesse was also cool. And of course that wonderful quote at the end by Giles "The earth is doomed". I loved it. another 8/10

The Harvest? Two words. Poor Xander! I loved his reaction to Jesse's death, it showed how much he cared for him. I was shocked that Willow didn't seem to care about Jesse's death, like he wasn't her friend or something. I was more shocked with Xander's non caring reaction to Jesse getting dusted! After all the anger and bitterness he went through when he found out that Jesse became a vampire ... then nothing after Jesse's death. He must really hate vampires.
This episode started one of Xander's biggest complexes, his hate for vampires. "I don't like vampires," he said. And I think Giles' words about Jesse wearing the face of his killer stuck in Xander's head ... which explains Xander's ill treatment of Angel and Spike later on.
This episode also shows how brave Xander is, he just learns about vampires being real and jumped after Buffy to rescue his friend. Xander maybe insensetive sometimes, too sarcastic in a hurtful way but when his friends are in danger he's always there for them no matter what. I must say that he's one of the bravest characters, probably the bravest. He doesn't have any superpowers yet he's throwing himself in the face of danger while the others have powers to protect themselves.
Okay, I ranted about Xander only. But of all the charcaters he's the one who got so much going on in this episode, and well, he's my fave. *grin*

OOh its so long ago that I saw this! But its still one of those episodes that never gets boring.
I think its probably the Harvest that draws you rather than Welcome to the Hellmouth, because of the great action sequences and some really funny diologue.
I really need to watch it again before I can remember any more

I used to really like The Witch but the more I see it the more it bugs me. I love the Xander/Buffy scenes, poor guy! And it still has one of my favourite starts, with the Giles speech about Buffy enslaving herself to a cult I think its Amy that annoys me so much now. a 7/10 from me.

Yeh I'd totally agree there Beck! the story just seemed to be a little too flimsy and run of the mill, but then again it was only the 3rd episode and Joss was still trying to keep the networks on board so he couldn't really put too much of his uniqueness into it.
The Giles scene is funny as hell I just love it! and they eyes in the statue at the end still freak me out, its just too weird! Another thing thats morbidly funny is when Amber's hand set on fire, I know its not supposed to be funny but I can be a little sadistic at times! lol
overall 6/10

Ah The Witch provided us with our first plot twist and our first metaphor. I absolutely loved the Giles speech as you have both mentioned and i also enjoyed all the random horrors that befell the cheerleaders. The mouth being covered up is particularly nasty as it would be something that would totally freak me out.
Now the metaphor i really like in this episode the whole 'parent living through there kids' thing because it is so commen these days. Obviously the BuffyVerse took it that little bit further by the parent actually living through their kid, which i think was a fabulous plot twist.
Obviously now we look back at season 1 the episodes are not the best but when i first saw them and knew no better i thought they were great. I mean getting trapped alive in your own trophy, pure pure class. And Buffy throwing another cheerleader across the room because of her strength ahhh how i laughed.
Buffy "you know why i like you Xander....cos you are totally one of the girls"
How his heart must have shrunk
Overall i give it an 8/10 as in my view it was one of the better season 1 episodes

Ah The Witch Buffy "you know why i like you Xander....cos you are totally one of the girls" How his heart must have shrunk LOL, that was one of my favourite moments along with Giles' speech at the beginning about Buffy joining a 'cult' haha ;D

If no one else has any opinions to add... we'll move on to Teacher's pet.
First episode I ever saw. Wasn't impressed then, and I am less impressed every time I watch it. The story is just... well... lame. There are some nice moments, I liked Buffy's talk with her teacher at the beginning, Flutie insisting everyone has counselling, Cordy's selfish attitude towards it, Xander being ousted a virgin... but the overall story is seriously lacking. It doesn't help that Ms French is ugly lol. So overall... not impressed. Maybe a 2/10.

I'd give it a 4/10. I don't know why but all the storylines centreing around Xander and women (Inca Mummy Girl, Teachers' Pet...) seriously lack in terms of the plot.

I agree basically with everything Beck said. And I was pissed that they killed the only teacher that had faith in Buffy (other than Giles if you count him as a teacher), and I loved that Flutie wanted everyone to talk to someone if they saw the body.. it was hilarious. But like Beck said, it wasn't really a great episode. I didn't like the whole praying mantis thing, it kind of grossed me out, and the claw vampire was kind of pointless... so I'll give it a 3/10

This must surely go down as one of the poorest episodes of them all. It had nothing going for it at all. The first glimpse of a nice teacher towards Buffy and he is beheaded, the teacher Miss French was not in any way attractive and the Vamp with claws was crap. Angel talks about how old the vampire is and we see that he had managed to scratch him but he just got poofed no fuss what so ever. Also i know it was the first Season but the Mantis was absolute crapness.
Plus Points hmmm Xander and his virginity lol and the way he tried to get Buffy and Willow to look like his sex friends infront of the guys. Buffy getting her leather jacket from Angel and.......ah yes the bat audio being on the wrong side of the tape.
Other than that it is just not a great watch and is usually skipped by me while watching Season 1
1/10 (Worst Episode Ever)

I totally forgot about the audio being on the wrong side.. yes that was funny. And I agree.. the Mantis .. oh god, how I laughed at the shitty effects.
