I find it hard to believe that anyone but Joss owns the Buffy brand

I don't like it at all either. I hope it turns out to be just another rumor.

Irene your link is blank for me, maybe because I use Firefox?.
I saw an article with Joss' reaction:
What do you think about this Buffy movie they're making without you? JOSS WHEDON: I hope it's cool.
I think its a horrible idea but then again, the movie was out before the show why shouldn't the person who holds the rights be allowed to make a movie? I think ALOT if not all buffy fans will not be taking to kindly to this idea, me included, I think they should leave it alone if they have no Joss, yes the first movie is fun to laugh at but certainly nothing more.
I think its a vampire movie, made by someone who knows the buffy name will rake in money, or atleast thinks it will. Sad to say but when you don't own all of the rights to something it WILL be exploited.
I don't really care. If Joss isn't involved, it is just another movie and as long as they don't try link it to the show they can go ahead and throw lucrative at it.
Like Loz said, hard to believe Joss doesn't own the buffy brand he MADE it a household name and now it feels like Kuzui is cashing in.
now to insert an SG1 quote "Never underestimate your audience. They're generally sensitive, intelligent people who respond positively to quality entertainment. "
I see the movie flopping like an old fish and we can go back to reruns of buffy, firefly and some dollhouse!.

It seems like a waste to me, really. Do they seriously think a lot of people will see it? They have to know that Joss fans won't want to see it, and those are the only people who would watch anything about the Buffyverse.
It just seems like a poor decision, marketing-wise, entertainment-wise, and art-wise. It's icky.

I think they actually believe they will attract Joss Fans, I doubt the movie will be much different from the first I was hoping to see a buffy (as in our beloved scooby gang) movie and it is silly that we are getting this cods wallop instead.

I don't believe Joss wouldn't be consulted. The people who own the rights worked with him for years, they aren't just random people wanting to make the movie. Joss wasn't entirely happy with the way the first movie was directed so hopefully they listen to him more this time and don't make it as comedy like as the first movie. Might be a more serious remake of the original I suppose In any case, I would go see it. I'd probably hate it, and bitch about it throughout it, but I'd still go see it.

I didn't think they are serious about the movie until now. If they are already linking Hollywood stars to the movie, surely it means it's going to happen...
Two weeks after she slammed Wonder Woman and reportedly passed on playing Lara Croft comes a rumor about another genre film that Transformers starlet Megan Fox is reportedly under consideration to star in.
Cinefools claims to have heard from an industry source that Fox is being eyed to play the title role of Buffy Summers in the recently announced big-screen relaunch of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The new movie will not involve Joss Whedon or be tied in anyway to either the 1992 film or the TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar that followed.
We recommended Fox, along with several other young hotties, to play the vampire slayer in our recent Buffy Casting Couch column.
IGN contacted Buffy producer Roy Lee about the rumor, who said, "The rumors of Megan Fox being involved with Buffy are just rumors. As with any film project with a female lead under the age of 30, Megan is the actress that most studios want so it is no surprise her name is mentioned. While I think she would be great for our project, we are still in the early stages of developing the script.
It's bad enough that they are doing this without Joss and now to possibly have Megan Fox in it?! Ewwwww....

Hahaha Megan Fox. The entire thing is a laughing stock, the original buffy movie may have been very cheezy but it was all in good humour, this is just shite

What a load of Bollocks! no self respecting buffy fan would ever give it the time of day without Joss's involvement

Hehe me too.
Really curious to see who they will cast as the lead. And whether or not they'll keep the other characters or bring back old characters from the original movie (e.g. Pike).

Here's AH's take on the remake. Today we had a chance to sit down with former Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Alyson Hannigan. She played Buffy’s nerdy yet loveable sidekick Willow during the show’s run and for my money it was she, not Buffy, who was by far the best part of the series. Willow’s one of the biggest reasons Buffy worked as well as it did and though Hannigan has now moved on to other things (like How I Met Your Mother) it’s almost impossible to imagine any Buffy project without her. Well start imagining.
We asked her about those Buffy remake plans and she seems as perturbed by the whole thing as the show’s fans. When we asked her what she thought of Buffy without Joss she said, "Yeah, and that’s a very big mistake in my opinion.” Whedon wrote both the 90s movie and ran the subsequent spin-off television show she was a part of. So it makes sense that Hannigan says, “I mean if Joss isn’t involved, it’s only the title."
And without Joss, there’s no way they’ll get her involved in it. Not even for a cameo. She says, "Not without Joss. Joss is the only reason that we would go back. I mean, it’s just ridiculous to think of that TV show without Joss. That’s just silly to me… And all the fans know that, too, so I don’t know what they’re thinking."
Hannigan’s reaction to remake echos that of former Giles Anthony Stewart Head, who, rather gleefully trashed the notion a few weeks ago here. Look it’s no mystery why they’re doing this. Vampires are hot and let’s face it, Twilight is basically just a watered down Buffy ripoff so why not bring back the real deal and get rich. But I’m pretty sure nobody wants it. Not the fans, not the Buffy cast, and probably not Twilight fans who are too busy swooning over Edward to notice anything else.

I'm glad original Buffy stars are speaking out against it. It's such an icky thing to do. And like ASH said, it's all because of this supposed "new" vampire craze".

If it doesn't have Buffy, it isn't a "Buffy Movie". It would be a spin off movie, not even like Angel since it wouldn't have any of the characters. And it was the characters and Joss' wit that made it what it was. I have no interest in a tacky half assed idea of a spin off movie.

It's going to have Buffy, that's for sure. Whether or not they have the other characters like Willow or Xander or even Giles is another story.
Can they even use those character when they belong to Joss? Or don't they? I'm not sure how this works. :-\

If I'm not mistaken, I don't think the characters belong to Joss, I don't think. I remember reading it somewhere when they were discussing the comics.
