Anyone seen this new show on the CW? I caught the first episode the other day it reminded me of Twilight . Anyway...not sure what I think about it, I love otherworldly stuff so I will keep watching to see if it picks up. I think it is based off of the books? Anyone read them?.

Yeah I saw the trailer and it looks like a rip-off of Twilight, but then I heard somewhere that the Vampire Diaries books were written before Twilight. I haven't read them, though. I might catch an episode or two just because my dear Ian Somerhalder is in it. Edit: Are TV ads for shows called trailers?? I saw the commercial I should say..

I don't think it has started here yet, though it has been advertised to start soon, I was going to watch it so hopefully it's good. I read up about the books - they were released first (remember Stephanie Meyer said Twilight came to her in a dream... lol). I hope they aren't too much alike though. Bre, the guys do look pretty hot lol

The books came out in the early 90s. But the tone of the show is so much like the Twilight movie though. And the lead vamp looks a lot like Edward. I just hope he acts better though. I might catch it if it comes on in NZ but I'm not too fussed.

I prefer Vampire Diaries to Twilight. They are VERY similar, although I think the characters are alot better written. The teens actually act like teens also. Ian Somerhalder was awesome, but scary .

I read a review somewhere that said it was worse than Twilight. Hm.... That's a pretty big call, might have to watch for myself.

Well Twilight (the movie) was pretty frickin' bad so if this is worse than Twilight, it has to be really bad..

Definetly don't judge it from the first episode, the first episode was pretty bland put personally for me I hated twilight so it can't get any worse. However if you enjoyed Twilight then I think you may dislike the show more. Ian Somerhalder was the best thing about the first episode, I hope it picks up and I definetly don't rate it in my top TV Shows! but I love character growth and I am hoping the lead lady isn't written as ridiculous as the one in Twilight. When you watch the first episode you will be hit in the face with Twilight! some dodgy things like Fog where vampires are also

I tried finding the pilot online, but I can't find it anywhere. I'll probably just wait until it's shown as a rerun.

But if it's better I might check it out.

Bre the CW channel have the pilot online now (I think) www.cwtv.com/cw-video/the-vampire-diaries/ (they make you download the video player though) . It definitely has a Twilightesque feel to it. That isn't always a bad thing, the basic storyline of Twilight was interesting to me, I just thought the way the Characters were portrayed was incredibly Naff. No overly controlling Vampire (although he needs a little more backbone and little less self loathing) and.. well.. Ian Somerhalder is so much fun . I am very against judging a show by the first episode if I did that with Buffy I probably would never have watched the rest.

I just watched the first episode. I'll put anything about the plot in spoiler tags just in case someone else wants to catch the pilot. Coming into it, the first scene reminded me exactly why I liked Buffy. Because the blonde is usually always the damsel in distress (like in this first scene), and Buffy totally throws that idea out, but I kept watching it and I actually really liked the pilot! I love the fog (totally Dracula-esque) and that the vampires can't enter a home without being invited. Makes me miss Buffy. I have a couple questions like about the ring he was wearing (which seems like it's going to be a gem of Amara type thing??), and if her friend is really psychic or who that Katherine girl was. But I'm sure those will be explained soon enough. Elena really reminds me of how Bella was written in Twilight (not like she is portrayed in the movies...) so I really like her so far. Stephan reminds me of puppet Angel. And did you think that blonde sounds just like Hilary Duff?? And of course Ian Somerhalder was great! I wish there was more of him in the first episode, but I'm sure more will be explained. It's obviously not the best show so far, but the actors all seem to be decent and it's MUCH better than the Twilight movie. So I'll keep watching.

Bre, Vampires needing permission to enter is one of my Favourite thing about Vampire lore!, So I was also happy to see that.
I definitely think her friend is Psychic which I think will make for some interesting storylines especially when she spends more time with Stefan.
I think the ring is a Lapis Luzuli which is weird because it is known for it's healing powers. But I think Egyptian mythology recognizes it as a sign of spirituality and would bury it with the dead to protect them in the Afterlife so then it makes sense! The blonde does sound like Hilary Duff! . Ian Somerhalder plays a great character, so interesting, I missed the second episode I thought it was on tonight but I did see trailers and I can't wait to see Damon meet Elena. I think a lot of people who have slated the show after it's first episode are Hardcore Twilight fans who feel Vampire Diaries is a Twilight rip off. Although a lot has changed from the books (I have a friend who has actually read them, I was shocked!) the show is alot Darker than Twilight (Movie) and brings back some of the Vampire Lore that was missing from Twilight also. Unfortunately my friend is a moron and told me who Katherine was (in the book) so I know some of the backstory which would have been nice to find out with Steven! now I know and he doesn't and it bugs me

Maybe I'll read the books if I really get into the show. Aren't they on Thursday nights? I think they'll show the second episode before the new one next week. Hopefully.

I finally got to watch the first 2 eps. I'm liking it! If it stays well-done, I'll probably give the books a go. It's good how they've kept to the vampire traditions, like not entering houses without permission, and the glamouring. And I LOVE how their eyes go, and the fact that they have fangs - vampires need fangs, so at Twilight lol. I hope it doesn't get all lovey-dovey when Elena first finds out about Stefan. And I'm kinda hoping for a big showdown between Stefan and Damon later on. Oh and one other thing, the guy that lives with Stefan, calls him "Uncle Stefan". Is he related somehow, or just acting as a 'father-figure' for show?

It is getting very dark. Last weeks episode featured Damon skimming over the second Twilight book asking why Bella was such a walk over and mocking Edward for Sparkling . Bec I think he is a relation, on last weeks episode he mentioned that it was tough being related to vampires and having a history of them in the family. I love Damon! the eating of people (and my god is eating the right word) is a definite flaw with him though .

The writers are cheeky wee sobs . Clearly they knew the show would be compared to Twilight and then focused on the two major differences (that VD doesn't have thankfully) Sparkles and doormats !.
